Around this time last year (actually I can pinpoint the precise day), I rode my beloved TDM back from a day helping a mate with his new shop and felt a painful sort of twang in my right hip.  It had always been a bit painful on longer rides so I ignored it as best I could and rode the hour home.

After visiting the doctors ("I dunno what's wrong, call this number for NHS Physio Direct, but you might want to think about going private."), I did indeed go to a private physio who diagnosed an anterior femoral impingement (bit of hip joint rubbing against another bit where it shouldn't).  He gave me some stretches and exercises which help day-to-day, but it still hurts to stand still for long periods, and just sitting on a bike is agony, let alone riding.  It's a bit of a problem as a gigging musician too, although this isn't so bad since I'm constantly moving and shifting weight.  I only rode again once more - the 2 miles to the MoT tester and back.

Anyway last weekend I drained the fuel out of my bike and laid it up.  I can't bring myself to get rid of it as it's been with me since 2004 and maybe, just maybe, in the future, some sort of cure will happen and I'll get back out there.

I'm not asking for sympathy or advice or anything like that, it's just quite cathartic to type this out.  I know you lot are just as passionate about motorcycling as I am so you'll understand what a wrench it is.

Sorry to hear about your problem Cap'n. Hopefully one day it willl "twang" itself back into place and joy shall reign again. I can't imagine what it would do to me if I couldn't ride a bike again.

Worrying because I too get a pain in my right hip when riding now and again, and came close to having to stop riding a couple of years ago after a stroke. Life, and the ability to ride is a fragile thing, so live for today or "carpe tdm"!!
Hope your problem is temporary and you're soon back in the saddle cap'n.g

Don't know if hip replacement would be appropriate in your case matey, but I had started with progressive hip trouble about 4 years ago and ended up going under the knife in June 2016.

Before the op I couldn't ride my FJR1300 anymore and with a very heavy heart I p/xed it for a Burgman 650 which in itself soon became too much to manage and was swopped for the lighter Silverwing. Scooters kept me on two wheels but were a poor substitute for a 'real' bike which I missed terribly.

The hip operation laid me low for a while but I was soon walking painlessly, albeit with a walking stick, but after around 12 weeks I felt confident enough to tackle a motorbike again and the TDM with its narrow tank and seat, lightweight and comfortable riding position fitted the bill perfectly. And I've since been to Scotland twice, France twice and this year to Ireland.

So my advice is if surgery is an option then don't hesitate to go for it. But whatever happens I hope things get better for you and you're able to ride out again soon.

Riggers.

i'm on week 12 of a hip replacement. I also run so the surgeon has left the "cup joint" free so bone can grow around the joint to make a stronger fixing for when i start running again.
won't be riding till spring I recon nothing going to stop me anyway.

I've already entered a 10k and 5 k race in Feb and not had the ok from the X-ray yet

'Scuse me Cap'n S but your profile shows you to be 98, which must make you one of the oldest bikers in Britain. I don't like to be picky but with 100 just around the corner you can expect a few aches and pains occasionally! :)

There must be a point when the graphs of age and average speed cross. I think I passed that a lot of years ago.

Seriously, thank you everyone for your kind words. I'll be going back to pester my GP, see if I can get any further. Failing that, it's the carving knives and Lego Technic set.

Some GP's have speciality subjects so it might be worth finding out if any at your local practice specialise in osteopathy and see if you can book in to see him/her.

Experience tells me it can make a big difference in the path you take to getting sorted.

That don't sound like a lot of fun. Hope you find an answer soon.
