Took the bike in for the MOT and it passed....woohoo. :)

Tester mentioned a bulb had blown on the instrument panel but he wouldn't fail it for that.  Soooooo, got home and investigated.  None of the instrument lights were working but the indicator, neutral and high beam lights were.

There are 3 small bulbs and 1 even smaller bulb that illumintate the dials so I pulled them all and 2 small and the 1 smaller bulb/s had blown, the other bulb hadn't blown but did have a dodgy connection which I cleaned up.  Swapped the 2 blown small bulbs and they all worked fine.  Didn't have a spare for the 1 smaller bulb so will source one tomato.

I'm a bit at a loss as to how this has happened, tried wiggling all the wires and the bulbs still worked.  I'm wondering if I somehow shorted them when I fitted the new ignition switch a few months ago.  Thing is, if you only use the bike during the day, loike wot I do, it's hard to see if the instrument bulbs are working.

Did I mention the pug has a blown dash bulb..and the full beam doesn't illuminate...eeeks

But if they're 'shorted', they're still not going to see more than 12V (14V running) across them ?

Is the voltage regulator working fine then? Measure the voltege with the engine running, end rev the engine a bit to see how far the voltage rises at higher (e.g. 4-5 thousand) RPM.

Used to look after some Peugeot taxis years back.If the headlight bulb went the other side would soon follow. That is, we'd fit one new bulb but soon after the opposite bulb would soon follow even if it was only fitted a few day back.

Got to the point if one went we'd replace both sides and all was well.

Was thinking there might have been a surge in voltage/amps as the bulb popped????

The voltage drop over the wiring is reduced, when only one bulb is drawing current (when one is faulty). This increases the voltage over the remaining bulb. A higher voltage over a bulb significantly reduces its lifetime. (Peugeots are renowned for non-optimal wiring and especially connectors/contactors, which may increase this effect...).

For the dash lights, I don't expect this effect as these don;t draw much current in thye 1st place.

As you havent noticed it yourself (maybe by not driving in darkness for a while), and it only showed up at the MOT, maybe they just one after the other went bad over the last year or so, due to normal wear?

It's quite possible the bulbs have gone over a longer period of time, I'll keep an eye on the new ones though.  £3 for a tinyweeny lickle bulb from Halfrauds and £3.50 for a pair of the others ! <_<

All working now, just need to refit the cowling and sidepanels.

Yeah, I will next time Dave.  Just convenient and quick to go to Halfrauds.  Also had to settle for a 2.3w replacement for the 3w bulb.

Maybe consider led replacements next time Ian, have them on mine courtesy of aircooled.

I did consider fitting led's Cliff, I've got a couple of 'em as spares but, I prefer the softer light of the oem bulbs, found the led's a tad too bright and white.

I thought the same too, but then that would indicate an intermittent faulty regulator.

Thinking about it does the dash have it's own regulator ? I don't think so but I've never actually checked. A lot of cars used to have dash regulators fitted so maybe that's why I'm thinking about it.

but anyway, a common failure could be high shock loads on a bulb with an old and more fragile filament (although they're rubber mounted so maybe not....)....or just simply old age

If production of bulbs is concistent, they would all blow up at the same time....

I wouldn't search for a particular reason unless they blow up too quickly. In my years of repairs I've seen far stranger things 😎

Yes, older cars had a regulator for the fuel and temp gauges.
