Well, now I have an answer :-)
When I connect undercover space with atmosphere (remove camshaft sensor) the air go through the pipe and back.
900er engine too sealed ...

I don't know but maybe the pipe only vents at a certain pressure ?

I'm trying to imagine how the oil which is pumped to the top of the engine returns through any seals ?
The oil is free to run down the camchain pathway, which directly links to the bottom of the crankcase.
The lower crankcase vents through it's own .....errrr...vent, so there is no obvious sealing that I can see.
The cam cover has a device built into the breather outlet, which I thought was only to prevent splashes/droplets of oil from migrating to the airbox. Perhaps there is some valving inside that mechanism.
The pictures on this ebay listing show the inside of the camcover

EDIT - the items 17,18 and 19 are all for the breather. It shows no valve. Perhaps there is a blockage ?

Is it possible that someone has attempted to disable the AIS system by blocking it off at the rocker cover, but they chose the wrong pipe ?

Now I temporary blocked AIS too :-) Looking for knocking sound source from cylinder head :-(

Next step - start engine when breath pipe removed. Result - strong air flow from cover flange. Breathing is OK :-)

there's a reed valve in there which suggests air out only at certain pressure

You are talking about AIS valves. My post is about head cover vent pipe :-) (pos. 18.19 on this picture)

yes, the reed valves sit onto 18/19 then the vent pipe attaches to the reed valve cover.
The cam cover sits between the two items according to the schematic.

Are you saying that we have 2 small AIS reed valves and another one reed valve for the valve cover vent pipe? Is there three reed valves?
Maybe I can't understand you right because my English is terrible :-(

errr - no, it doesn't.
18 & 19 vent the cover to the air filter housing via the outlet from the cover that points towards item 22 in the diagram.
The parts 18 & 19 are visiible in dandywarhol's picture at the far end in line with the spark plug holes, appearing as a box.
The diagram on p5-7 of the WSM clearly shows the hose that connects cover to housing.
The AIS hose from part 21 goes to the filter housing too. The two hoses are shown as items 1 & 2 on the WSM diagram on p3-9.
HTH
ADD If you want to see the two hoses they appear in this post of mine a while ago. http://www.carpe-tdm...=12948&p=312541

Do the 2 small stubs under the AIS valve connect to the exhaust ports?
It looks like it.
See this parts diagram: https://www.fowlersp...a/cylinder-head
The gasket #25 has two small circles and they match the holes in the cylinder head between and slightly in front of the plug sockets.
Also, that is how the Honda PAIR system works, on the VFR800Fi for instance. Been there, done that one too.

crankcase breather should surely be open to airfilter with just an oil separator.
This is what I wanted to clarify :-)
I thought that there might be one more reed valve and it can make knocking noise.
