Chris R popped up today for a mini fettle.

Changed the rear disc bolts, but despite heating them and being very careful two of them decided to come out halfway and shear off. Time to deploy the drilling jig. Two M8 x 1.25 3D (24mm) long helicoils had to be fitted to the galled threads.

Front ones came out no bother. We moved on to fork seals and head bearings which were replaced with a taper bearing set.

Various rusty bolts   were thrown in the bin and replaced with stainless.

The rear brake torque arm bolt was particularly offensive and was replaced with a machined stainless boss and cap screw which happened to be in the bits box.

Not many pics as Chris was so busy getting into it he forgot to take many  :D

Chris brought a nice new stainless sprocket carrier and axle nuts  with him, so he's slowly being converted.

Disc bolts are titanium front and rear   :yeyeye:

The new jig worked perfectly. :)

We would have been up shit creek without a paddle otherwise.

I think the bolts break because the open end in the hub corrodes and then galls up when taking it out.

Both broken bolts did so over halfway out. They seem to be made of very soft steel.

ChrisR 's bike is all sminky bling now.

Thanks very much for a full days hard work today Lee, a 2 hour slog home through stationary M1/M25 traffic meant I had no choice but to take it easy! Sorry I was too busy watching in awe to take many pictures, even though you talked me through everything I'm none the wiser so your TDM expertise remains mainly your own! I think I'll have to try and soften up the ride a bit now, but it looks like everything we took off was put back on properly again. Look forward to seeing you at Ali's, I'll try and think up some more impossible tasks for you.
Thanks again.
Just seen how filthy (and clogged up)that rear disc looks in the picture, I'll have to sort that!

Hi leehenty!

Looks like the jig worked perfectly and passed the test. :good:
This is the work that I wish I had followed closely. Even if only to clean parts or pick up tools.
Congratulations leehenty beautiful work! :clapping:
