download the apple programme iTunes, it'll automatically upload when you connect the phone

Technically iTunes won't download your photos - it will allow for local backups.
Two main optins.
1. Plug cable directly into PC. Phone should appear in File Explorer. Navigate to the photos folder on the phone, and copy/paste to PC
2. Download iCloud Desktop app, and turn on sync in phone then as you take photos they'll sync to your PC via the app - LINK

I use Picasa for downloading and importing pictures easy peasy

Get in quick on that one as Google are removing Picasa, in favour of the cloud based Google Photos.
You can still give Picasa 3 via https://picasa.en.softonic.com/- just pay attention to the installer as it's not a native Google installer to begin with...
