I didn't want it but windows downloaded it anyway. :punishment: Now I have two problems.

1  My online insurance docs wont open. Actually they open for 2 secs and disappear again. The kindles open them no problem but I cant connect them to my printer.

2  When I plug a device such as my phone in the usb port I cant find it in file explorer. Again it knows its there because I get the icon flash for an instant

Any ideas folks. Please keep it simple (like me). I don't speak geek :istupid:

Yeh, dual boot peppermint and only use windows when absolutely necessary.
I've not used it at home for ten years now.
Remember when it comes to security too, you can get in through windows but a penguin will bite back.
As for your current problem, I'm afraid my window system knowledge ended with xp

ONLINE documents?

I would have suggested use an alternative browser. (simple)

Your USB activity and 2 secs explorer description, suggests something else is awry. (Google Explorer + 2 + seconds)

The comforting thing is that you are not alone, the solutions are manifold and as simple as they get.

If I had any advice worth giving, it would be to follow the Windows 10 solutions and keep it simple.

Don't use Edge #ffs

Do a full scan with Defender and then Malwarebytes

Alternatively, leave well alone. Win10 will audit itself and fix things over time. It usually takes my system 3 weeks to get chugging before they come back and mess it all up again.

I have analysed your system and have identified the problem.

Please bend over for a system reboot.

Do something.

Doing nothing was a final suggestion and whilst a valid scenario, is no final guarantee for a happy outcome.

Google.

I assume the insurance docs are PDF files?  Win10 defaults to trying to open PDF's in Edge, and it's crap at it.  If you've download the PDF to your machine right click on it, select "Open With" and see if it give's an option with "Acrobat" in the title.

That's some good observation and advice there  :good:

something similar,  I stored a lot of TV shows and films on a 1TB hard drive enclosure.Running XP.

Computer died and I got an old piece of crap(in a skip) running windows 7.

Would not recognise hard drive at all, though it would recognise 2 others which had also been loaded using XP computer, Several genius techies claimed that drive was f***** and should be binned.

Much later I connected to a Sumvision media player and everything worked perfectly.

I think that Microsoft plan built in obsolescence to force you to buy shit you don't want.

Do a Google search for "how to uninstall windows 10". I know it exists because I sent it on to my brother sometime during Summer.

Cannot find it now though.

I had 10 donate itself to me without asking (but I did leave a blank piece of paper on the computer! Such a token was obviously sufficient a request). A friend has battled for some weeks of 10 rebootings repeatedly and print total failures. His IT son is putting him back on 7.

So in order to fix yer problem Sam, you need to get a divorce, start a new family and raise a son to be an IT expert. :P

Can always reverse the Win10 upgrade, and revert back to Win 7.

Windows will do it for you too!

1 - avoid at all cost any MS navigator.

2 - avoid Adobe products, get alternate pdf readers like Foxit.

3 - avoid any MS OS, if not possible stay with XP or Seven.

4 - never trust any MS "security/privacy" tool, get a real firewall.

5 - get a copy of a good hosts file and have your browser use it (Firefox requires some tweaking on that point), this will make your anti-virus useless.

6 - etc.

Only paranoids will survive IT !

Better turn the pc off and have a cake...

I've got windows 10 on 5 PCs but do find some of the defaults a pain. I agree with getting something new to view PDFs in. Edge is ok for browsing but that's it. If you're doing internet printing would have thought the Kindles should cope. I've not tried my kindle but I can do it on my android phone.

....and I've just noticed my laptop keyboard is set up to be USA since the last update. What a pain in the butt!

If you run a primary User and separate secondary Administrator account on the laptop fer securita, you might find that any additional accounts beyond the Admin User, still get configured as USA locales, even if the Admin User is configured as UK.

Bizarre, I just found this now on my desktop and rectified it straight away.

Control Panel > Region > Administrative (tab) > Copy settings (button) >  tick + tick > OK (button)
