rite gents im thinking of fitting a pair of 3vd forks onto my 4tx as they are in far better condition than my original 4tx ones. any thoughts as to why it would be a bad idea ?

They could be a bad idea if they don't fit.  3VD forks are smaller diameter so you'd also need the top and bottom yokes and I dunno if mk1 yokes will fit a mk2 frame.

ive got the yokes and everything i was wondering if they would be to soft with them being smaller diameter and narrower springs.

The construction of MkI forks are regarded a more sophisticated and better working one than the MkII's. Wouldn't bother about 2mms less diameter.

got loads to do on my bike so mite aswell fit them while its pannels are off.
