Hi All,

I am new to the TDM family, just bought a TDM 850 a couple of months back. So far havent been off to the best of starts.

I had a running issue around 4k revs, which made the bike buck, bog down, and eventually die, having to have the choke on to make it run again to get it home.

With some investigation I believed I narrowed it down to a couple of things, the airbox not seating correctly, letting a lot more air into the mix. Also, the carbs needed a good service/set up.

Long story short, I serviced the carbs and refitted them took it out for a ride and the same thing was happening. So out with the carbs again and then noticed you could take the full emulsion (what I think is the emulsion tube) sleeve off with a spanner after taking one of the jets out. I then proceeded to try and take the emulsion tubes out and have absolutely f***ed one with my hamfisted annoyance at the whole situation, shortly after realising they were pressed in at the factory....great.

I am now trying to find a replacement carb set:

My carbs are: 4TX4 40 TO21

I found a set on ebay, with the code: 4TX4 40TBY5

Can anyone tell me if they are similar? the same with different numbers? or completely different? I need a bit of help deciphering the codes.

After reading the pinned model list, I believe my bike to be a 1998 registered in 2000.

Any help, would be much appreciated.

Going off the video you linked, your carbs are off a '99-'01 which are 4TX4 and for the TDM850 mk2a.  Don't think the other number make any difference.

loike the ebay ad says they are fer a 2002 TDM 850 and look rough in my onion.  They will fit a 1999-2002 TDM 850.  I reckon they are not for your 1998 model.

Seems to be some confusion over the year of the bike.  Carbs off his bike are deffo mk2a carbs, so, either someone swapped the earlier carbs for later wans, or his bike is a '99-'01 mk2a.

Do you have a temp gauge or a fuel gauge Adam ?

yep i've seen a few with the 'incorrect' carbs fitted and the TPS wiring bodged to suit,  i reckon people buy a used set of TDM carbs. off the net and only realise the differences once they unbox the packaging then think 'i will make these fit' !

Ads,   if that pic you attached of the TDM with the fuel gauge is your boike then those carbs on ebay will fit.  Is there a white sticker under the seat and on the nearside frame rail that states 4TX4 i wonder?  Try these people fer spares.  There are a few places in Frants and The Nedderlands that specialise in the TDM/TRX.    https://www.gn-moto.com/

GNMoto are probably the best place to buy some carbs, their prices are reasonable and they will highlight any faults if there are any.

Studley can ya replace the emulsion tubes and needles on MK2a carbs?  I know ferra fact there was a time you couldn't but i do believe a kit has been produced in recent years to facilitate an overhaul.

Yes, if you know how to press them out and in.  Kedo.de used to sell the emulsion toobs.  Not seen or heard of a kit though.  NRP Carbs might also have, or be able to obtain, the toobs.  Might need to ask for toobs for the BDSR38 carbs.

Awesome, thanks guys, I have managed to pick up a set of carbs and will try those first. If they do work I will continue with trying to salvage the broken ones as well and report back my findings.

Hi Adam,

Here is a file for you: https://rednikmarto....vice/BDSR36.doc

I assembled it from couple of manuals.

It addresses also our carbs BDSR38/2.

Here are some photos i left, basically about required tools to replace needle jets of BDSR38.

https://tdm-bg.org/f...msg6043#msg6043

Recommend also the next few posts, its from our local bulgarian forum about TDM.

There intentionally exist few words in English, i wrote those for everyone who does not read bulgarian language.

Cheers friends!
