I've got a 1992 TDM850 with 19,000 miles that's doing only 35mpg on a 60 mile daily commute that involves 50% motorway and 50% city riding. This means I'm filling up every two days/120 miles.

Is this normal for a mk1? Even my old ZZR1100 did better than that.

Cheers

Hi and welcome, i'd expect you to get around 50mpg, maybe it's time to remove and inspect those needles and emulsion tubes in the carbs. ??

spyball alarm/immob, bluespot brake calipers and Stainless hoses, Fournales air adjustable shock with Remote Resevoir, forks raised 10mm thru yokes, racetech linear fork springs in 15 wt oil, Kappa wingrack/luggage, heated grips, Kedo handguards, dual heat controller to power heated jacket liner and or pants!!, Stebel 136DB horn, K&N air filter, colour matched Baglux tank cover (magnetic tank bag modified to fit cover), osram +50% headloight bulbs, headlight protector,"NitramSpecial" parking loight, tail light indicators all running on LED's & incorporate "Lite Buddies", MK7 Scottoiler fitted, taller screen, 2-2 stainless steel CCC's, Devil stainless down pipes. MKI Renntec engine crash bars & sump guard.
engine changed july 2007 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired.

I loike tay and hang sangwiches !

That is all I used to get on my Mk 1 with, supposedly, 6000 miles on the clock. Mind you it was usually either ticking over or flat out! How do you ride?

Yes, I know; one leg either side of the saddle! dry.gif

If you constantly use all of the available acceleration as I did I think it is quite easy to get into low mpg.

50mpg does sound more like it.

Looks like it's time to give the old girl a service smile.gif Was thinking of doing the shims so may as well pull the carbs apart too. Also got a new chain and sprocket kit, scotoiler and front tyre to get for it so looks like I have a busy weekend ahead.

Cheers

I'm generally pretty kind to the old girl. Usually sit at 85 on motorway and don't go over a ton because it sounds like it's killing itself. In the city there's no point caning it either.

Seems I should start from the air filter, then look at emulsion tubes then carbs generally. That should eek a few extra miles out per tank smile.gif

Go straight to emulsion tubes

oh ok ya can do the air filter on the way.....
Done: Homo sap navigation/ twisty thing on bars to make it go vroom/ grabby thing to make it stop (in front of twisty thing)/ 'leccy things front and rear to make it glow at night/ Sucky + drippy oiler thing to keep chains moist (!!) / Laser Pro Stock Race pipes / bleeding ear drums (see previous mod)
To do: Educate homo sap nav system to operate twisty + grabby things/ get ear plugs

All Trashed Now... Pants... its a Cat B Mwahahaha it lives again!!

My Mk1 has 30000 on the clock. As far as I know it's on the original tubes.
It runs with a stage 1 dynojet kit with 150 jets , a K & N filter and Mottad exhaust.
It runs smoothly with no pops or bangs and very little smoke. Uses hardly any oil.

I get 170 miles to a tank which I'm quite happy with.
This includes commuting and weekend blasts with sportsbike riders.

Now : Nowt
Then : Yamaha TDM850 4TX , Suzuki GSF1200N Bandit , Yamaha TDM850 3VD , Yamaha 600 Fazer , Suzuki GSXR750G , Honda CB1100F , BMW R75/5 , Yamaha RD250E , Yamaha XS250 , Kawasaki Z250C , Lambretta GP150 , Vespa 150 Super
