Has anyone mentioned the sidestand switch? You suggest it might be behaving differently on the sidestand. May not be this because of your clutch actions as described.

Has been mentioned I think, though not further investigated, because
- the first 10 clicks are also bumpy
- when stalled and restarted, I think it will stall again if not given gas in neutral, too
- should be a corresponding error code on the dash IIRC (which was there first time I checked but did not show up ever since, also no other codes right now)

If it's still possible the switch is misbehaving I will have to check that out also, but I don't know how I would do that.

EDIT:
So HT lead replacement and airbox mod did not help. The latter feels nice while the bike works though. What's strange is that when I disconnected the coils for safety reasons while wrenching, I forgot to reconnect the LH one and it threw a code immediately upon restart. So shouldn't I see a code when it acts up?
Also how involved would be spark plug replacement after lifting the tank? I have some working spares at home...

....and it couldn't be this problem, an original, faulty ECU? : https://www.tdm-yama...t.org/?page=ECU

It could! Thank you for the heads-up, will check that out!

EDIT:
Now that I think about it, if it was a fuelling issue, it would not smell like a puddle of gas right? But it does when it quits...

EDIT #2:
Found CB's excellent service guide and think I should be able to perform plug change.
Question is, is plug spanner included in factory toolkit, and if not, then exactly what type should I buy?

EDIT #3:
Valves out of spec maybe? Now that's just a wild guess, but thought I'd ask anyway...

Wonder if it might be the Cold Start Mechanism (CSM) sticking.

High idle is OK when starting and settles down well after a minute or two so wouldn't think so.

Just called an official Yamaha dealer near me and he said it sounds like a TPS issue! And the recall hasn't been done on it yet. Will have to make an appointment...

You say " would not smell like a puddle of gas". Are you you saying you smell fuel? As a guess, are both injectors working? Are the injector seals ok? What about loose muck in the fuel lines - works ok when there's no big demand but when you add a demand it blocks? I'm clutching at straws a bit here but going though things that have affected me on vehicles in the past.

Is there a fuel filter in there somewhere? before the regulator? Is it the regulator? Fuel pump? Sorry if you've already tired these.

Thank you for all the kind help everyone. I'm putting this on hold until TPS replacement. Fingers crossed!

EDIT:
Got an appointment for the recall: almost a month from now. Can't fathom why PO would not have had something so important (&free) done.
So happy I didn't sell my faithful little GS.

Sounds like the CO has reset to -128 with the duff battery. Glowing headers, overheating.

UPDATE
TPS replacement seems to have cured my issues.
Lucky there was a recall, else it would have cost me a small fortune.
Some keywords for my fellow Hungarian riders who may experience this in the future and do a search: Yamaha, alapjárat, elmegy, leáll, kormol, füstöl, gyújtás, túlmelegszik, benzin, kifogy. Fojtószelep szenzort kellett cserélni, volt rá visszahívás.

Also had similar symptoms for the last 15k miles or so.

I never have any issues starting the thing, but getting to the lights clutch in or even just in traffic it will cut out (not always). It also happened at quite an inopportune moment filtering through the Blackwall Tunnel yesterday.

I had a similar issue with an old SV650, which I also never got round to fixing. But this time perhaps I will.

I have done the amalgamating tape mod in the past I was suffering severe issues with arcing HT leads (losing all power, having to pin the throttle to get out of danger; nothing, nothing, nothing, everything). Tape mod ostensibly fixed it entirely.

Another item that could be related to this is my idle is beyond erratic. It really surges. Never close to stalling but probably from 1300rpm up to 1800rpm +.

Potentials:

  1. Throttle position sensor. This bike is post recall year (57MY) but with the hunting idle I wonder
  2. Old spark plugs, they're probably over 20k miles now. There are some waiting on the shelf.
  3. I made a half arsed job of wrapping the HT leads and now the problems are intermittent/the leads were on their way out and I should just have replaced them
  4. Side stand switch
  5. Corroded connector, somewhere (quite likely that this will be the case as she's run daily through any weather and I store her outside for character building)

Anyone got any other pointers? Battery terminals are not lose

I'm also looking for a way to prioritise my list. I am interested in methods that are cheap, non time consuming and have a good chance of fixing my issue! That would be the day

Start off replacing the leads if they were past best before taping them up,plugs and lift the tank to pull all the connectors and clean em then spray, that includes the ecu, my choice is ACF50, other lubes available, good chance you have a connection problem ? seems to happen on bikes used a lot and stored outside, hope you get it sorted.

btw..Magnecor will take an order over the phone.

Edit... the side stand switch is easy to repair as often it's just a corroded wire needs soldering.

This was about a different problem but might provide some clues for you. At least their bike got sorted.

I'll methodically work my way through all of that, I'll get back to you if I get to the bottom of it. I'll likely do it all at once so unless something is clearly broken I may not be able to give a conclusive answer as to what exactly causes it if I do indeed fix it
