I have to drive from Retford (DN22) to Heathrow, arriving at Heathrow for 9am (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Satnav gives the journey as around 2 1/2 hours, but clearly it will be a bit longer than that......can anyone advise how long I should allow at that time of day?

One thought would be to leave early (4am ish) to avoid the M25 carpark, but I like my sleep, so might be tempted to lie in a bit longer if I could judge the timing right.

Thanks in advance.............

Miss out the M1 & M25 car parks by leaving M1 at J16 and ping down to the M40 via A5/A43.  4 hours should be enough and you should have time for a (short) pit stop.

.......the AA route finder says 2hr 55 mins (168 miles)......which assumes leaving M1 @ junct.6(a?) > M25

I usually find them pretty precise

Agreed, but at that time of day (arriving smack in the middle of the 'rush hour') I don't want to get stuck in the jam.

You can use Google Maps and set the time of the journey (arrive by), and it will use average traffic details for that travel time.

Suggest 3-4 hours if you take the M40 route mentioned above (although it brings you off at a different M1 Junc I think...

I would err on the side of caution and make a 4am start, rather arrive early and grab a coffee than sit in traffic, ya can always catch up with an afternoon nap.

Pete, stay in bed and let the person you're picking up wait there until you decide to rock up. :D  9am must be the worst time to arrive at the airport.
