I know it's a personal preference and all that, but I've recently bought a tdm900 and I'm going to Scotland soon and need advice on the best touring screen. I'm 5ft 10" and need more wind protection than the std screen offers, I heard the mra screen is good, but which one, any other brands any good?
Any advice is very welcome.
Regards Neil.

MRA Vario - the adjustable one.

I have one and sit in a still bubble. I'm 6ft on a good day. I have done 400 mile days here in Scotland with no problems.

A contributory factor could be that I have extended the mirror stalks for a better view and that puts them about an inch higher and wider each side.

Be aware that your helmet can cause head bobbing, and the noise give the impression of turbulence. I wear earplugs under a Shoei Neotec.

Enjoy your visit up here.

At 5ft 11" the Mra Vario did not work for me, eventually i found that a screen cut down to the same size as the fairing suited much better, finding the right screen is frustrating and expensive, anyone near you with a different screen you could try ?? agree about the mirrors.

I have also gone through several screens, including the MRA vario, to find the right one. So far, without luck.

I am 6ft 7/16" and the MRA Vario wasn't any good. Lots of helmet buffeting no matter how I adjusted it.

At the moment, I have an MRA double bubble and it is only good up to approx 60 m/h before helmet buffeting starts. I will probably go back to the stock screen as it gives buffeting around the chest area instead of the helmet, which is less annoying.

I have had many naked bikes and actually prefer the constant wind pressure over the buffeting that comes with fairings/screens. The only perfect bike I have ridden (when it comes to no buffeting) was a HD Ultra Glide... There you could sit in the dry when it was raining

I've got 2 TDMs. One has an MRA and the other a Yamaha touring screen. Both are infinitely better than the standard screen, but neither are perfect. Oh, I am 5'11". Ali

I believe height isn't necessarily the interesting bit - but where your head is.

I'm 6'2" but have relatively short legs, meaning that my head is maybe 3-4" higher than the average 6'2"...

Also, horizontal position matters, do you stretch arms or lean slightly forwards ?

I have a power bronze touring screen with the mra adjustable extension. I still get side buffeting at national speed limit.

I’m 5’11” and my TDM has a Yamaha Touring Screen with a small extension thing on top. I thought that was an okay set up but I’ve just bought a Buell Ulysses that has a much shorter ‘Zero Gravity’ screen. You sit a lot closer to the whole screen set up on the Buell and I think that that, along with the shorter screen, helps to keep your lid in clean airflow whilst still taking pressure off your chest. No turbulence at all. I’ve still got the TDM, and I have no plans to sell it ;)

Another one here with an MRA variable screen. I find it reasonable, but do get some buffeting and noise, but find it much better than the standard offering. I agree with TDM4ever on his point about naked bikes sometimes being more comfortable, but then of course you don't get the protection that comes from a screen.

I'm about 5'11'' and about average build and I find a big difference in which setting is selected, much preferring the highest setting.

I mentioned my mirrors being moved slightly, and that maybe contributing to less buffeting.

Has anyone tried removing them altogether to discover their effect? Or just rotating them 90’ backwards out of the way.

Since I do not have a problem there is no point me doing this, but how about a complainer doing so?

For a full analysis we need peeps with OE and different aftermarket screens to report.

Further, has anyone used bar-end mirrors?

If you try this, remember one thread is left hand - or have they stopped doing that?

JBX, I'm sorry to hear of your family problems; there is no need to apologise. Do you have any reports on the effect of the France-only GT model with its fairing-mounted mirrors and higher screen?

I've tried several screens with varying degrees of success.
Original screen is rubbish, double bubble is a bit better. The MRA Vario would be great if I was a couple of inches shorter. As mentioned in other threads, drilling some holes low down on the screens help reduce buffeting. By far the best I've used is a palmer medium screen mounted on top of the original - kind of like a much bigger MRA.

This is all with the standard mirrors.

I use an MRA racing screen which reduced the buffeting but not the noise. Mirror extenders also helped slightly. I'm 5' 9"

I'm 6' 2" tall, and I use an MRA screen fitted to a "Palmer Products" screen mount.
A set-up which gives me a bit of adjustment, and virtually eliminates the buffeting for me.

For longer trips I have a "Palmer Products" large screen, which gives a lot of wind protection, but I prefer the look of the bike with the MRA on.

I can see why it would be a good solution. But, damn.. it doesn't look very good   :drinks:

Hi folks

Newbie alert! and slightly off topic - 850 4tx but screen related.

Picked up my first TDM on Friday, tinkered Saturday and had a quick short mile test ride to shake it down. All seems well but... my head seems to sit in a vacuum (insert blonde jokes here) as in, I can't breathe properly. Moving head up or down and its ok. Is it just me or is this a 'thing'? btw I was wearing my garage lid - on old open face with peak if that makes any difference.

Cant take the bike out for a proper run til next week/ month (tight ass waiting to tax it :) )

I think its the standard screen - see pic

cheers

BTW, the 9'er screen variations has been heavily debated of the years on here with different types, sizes and even people cutting holes to guide the airflow and pressure. There was a screen from a guy in Oz  - a tiger screen. That did away with the buffeting but at anything above 40 put considerable pressure on the front fairing. I had one for a bit but every gust of wind would flex the fairing and I had visions of the fairing cracking.

Don't get many folks complaining about the 850 screens though.
