this has probably been asked loads of times but as a new member of the group , is there  an in depth guide to setting up the timing on a 900 with pics if possible , i have the workshop manual but it isnt very clear , only having to do this as I have just replaced valve stem seals and head gasket

From memory a good starting place is left piston (cyl 1) at the top, and cam lobes for that cylinder both pointing outwards and away from each other....then look at the cam wheels for the timing marks to line up with the split face of the top of the head

The inlet cam will always be under load putting them back. Put exhaust cam in first dot must face up, cylinder 1 at TDC, then be careful tightening the cam caps for the inlet cam also dot must face up. Inlet cam can slip as it has to push down valves so I cable tie the chain to sprocket. niner is a 270 engine.
Once in and tensioner is released cable ties if any removed, turn engine two times and check both cam wheel marks line up.

If you can put inlet cam in without having to press down any valves the inlet cam will be 180 degrees out and it will not run, but no valves will touch either. The dots are next to the sprocket wheel and are tiny.

well that was short lived , :(  not sure if bike has dropped a valve head or timing chain has jumped was ticking over and all of a sudden clunk and engine stopped and also I have noticed that the oil seems to getting sucked out of the oil pan as it keeps saying no oil and not returning , oh the joys of biking , guess I am stripping top of the engine again

All the bolts will be easier to remove the second time, just see if a cam slipped a few teeth first
