water cooled two smoke with a electric powervalve thingy afaik. usual suspects can be rattliing at cold start and lack of compression, they like nice expensive two stroke oil.
really easy to fix provided the crank is ok. Various parts are available to take them up to about 170cc, check the power valve moves properly they often stick.

If you're expecting the same reliability of a 4 stroke run away but there's loads of fun to had with the power band. Long time ago I rode one although I rebuilt the top end twice on the DT, same engine I believe.

I did wonder if it was the same enjun as the TZR. Had Juan of them with the servo controlled power band and that was ace fun.
same enjun i tink, decent oil will prolong any 2T unit.

Apparently, there's the 15hp and the 28hp versions. The 28hp version being a very on-off affair regarding the powerband. Great frame design and capable of 55mpg.

if it's like the TZR125 then the restriction is fairly easy to remove by rotating the YPVS thingamajic around and removing a washer in the downpoipe.

Bloody hell not seen one of them in years spent my teenage years blowin them up along with the good old kmx125, mtx125 and ts125, aprillia sport pro 125, rg250, nsr125 holy christ I blew up everything I had back then ffs, spent many a night replacing piston and rings in my mothers kitchen with the bike in bits on the floor and she never complained once, I suppose she was happy knowing I spent everything on bikes and not on drink and drugs.
Anyhoo if the engine is in good nick buy it everything else can be made good, love the old 2 smokes

Lol. Parallel lives.
If the TDR tiddler is a DT engine then it would be feasible to slot a DT 230 or WR 200 motor in it. All the same family. Our DT 230 is allegedly over 40hp, it goes like a cut cat.
As said above, it's the bottom end of the motor and power valves that need to be checked. Should be loads of parts available.
I had my DT 230 re-built after drowning it in a creek, parts for top and bottom end, bearings, seals, piston kit ect was about $800 NZ, from Japan.
The motors are reliable with good maintenance but running quite lean on the auto oiler and stock jetting don't like top speed testing on motorways.Bigger main jet helps flow more fuel to keep the piston crown cooler.
TDM 850 Loud and unusual. CRM 250r Woo hoo! DT 230 Lanza Fiddled with.... Bloody hell, is that legal? GG Randonee AKA "I didn't think that was possible".

Agreed, bit more fuel will lose a little top end but lasts longer, unless you're gonna rag the pants of it.

They do encourage you to rag their pants off.... Riding a 2t on twisty roads is a rare pleasure nowadays.
