iv the 1999 tdm 850 just before the change over to the linkage shock  ,understand they changed the emultion tubes (correcting the prob ) in the carbs somewhere about this time , was wondering if my carbs have the earlier tubes or the the later ones and how do you tell without pulling the carbs down

If you have a digital odometer, a fuel gauge, no petcock, electric fuel pump you'll have the modified carb. They do wear out as well, last a bit longer. The tubes are a press fit.

thanks that's maybe good news as have all the above, being press fit,are the tubes replacible and when you say they wear out but take longer any idea of the life of the tubes normally

You said they were slightly oval in your previous topic Carrizog60. :unsure2:

Flea, I think my old mk2a will be on about 50,000 miles now and it's still giving good economy and running smooth on original toobs. Well, it was on the euro tour last Sept. :)

Depends on your riding habits does the tubes. I've seen posts claiming wear at 5000 miles. I do very little low speed urban riding and didn't need to replace mine until 94000. Even then it was still doing 50mpg but was black sooting the left plug causing a misfire. Back up to 58 - 62mpg after new tubes..

Looking good Chris. :good:

The mk2a carbs are designed differently internally compared with the mk1 and mk2 carbs though Apache.  In particular the sliders and needle design help prevent the needles rattling which prolongs the toob life. :)

Thinking of rebuilding my carbs. Seem to be two types for the tdm. Mikuni BST38 and BDST38. Anyone know if these are 3vd and 4tx or mk2 and mk2a ?

good to hear mines got about 38000 kls , ist main owner used for running mainly to work 11 kls ea way in town  , 2nd only 5000 kls h/way use , but seems to give the worn toobs symptoms from what iv read , smell of fuel and no need of choke to start (ist owner was a air craft machanic so presume well looked after ) so if do have the pressed in toobs how hard are they to replace or is it a shop job... side note just recived my new wilbers rear shock , just have to fit it over next couple of days (ya!!!) opps 57000kls not 38000

Mines were slitly oval,so they were shot... To remove you have to pull them from the top.

Check plugs condition. If they're looking good, odds on your tubes are still OK. Don't worry about the choke. I have a 4tx3 owned from new with 102000 miles up and I've never once used the choke, anytime of year. I have a new to me 4tx2 that fires up no problem without the choke too. Plugs in both bikes are perfect sand like colour...hth
