As a new rider of a TDM I'm lacking in confidence that I've got the chail slack correct. The book says 40 to 50 mm for my 850 but this seems very slack and different from anything I've come across before. Why so loose on TDMs?

The relationship between the drive sprocket, the swing arm pivot and the swing arm length together with the suspension travel, dictate how much slack will be needed. As the suspension compresses, the slack reduces. If at the tightest spot there is no slack, the load on the output shaft bearing causes failure.

Yup, Hombre is spot on.
Not enough slack and you'll hear the output shaft bearing whine. Too much slack and you'll feel the chain backlash when you decellerate.

50-60mm on a 900. If you ever have a new tyre put on the rear always check they haven’t taken the slack out.

And if you take it for an MOT where they are unfamiliar with the model, they may question it. I had a Yamaha dealer try to give me an advisory on slack chain, until I challenged him to check the spec in a workshop manual. I got a pass and no advisory. Went somewhere new this year and had the handbook in my pocker just in case.
2004 900 - Blue with lots of goodies
2012 900 - Still adding shiny bits. Was black, changed to white and now back to black again.

Funny you should say that. I got an advisory earlier this year. I let it pass at the time but actually thought that the chain was ok according to the book.
