I checked my car with the sat-nav and it was 5mph over-reading throughout. So 16% at 30 mph but 7% at 70mph. It was as if the dial was turned as an easy way to make it over read. Dunno how or if that might relate to the odo tho.

I have often wondered about this (and don't have a sat-nav to check) - if a speedo is reading, say, 10% high, does it follow that the odometer is also overstating by 10%, ie a bike showing 20,000 miles may only have covered 18,000?

I dont mind if the speedo over reads. It will help me keep my license. But I'll end up paying more for services/service items. Very cunning Mr Yamaha dry.gif

The TDM 900 has a rev limiter which kicks in at 9500. I was once told by a Yamaha dealer (and TDM rider) that you shouldn't worry about the redline, that the motor is safe to 9500, that it was just Yamaha being conservative. Dunno how true that is, but I wouldn't be reving my bike out to those extremes, TDM's are about torque not high revs anyway.

This thread has just prompted me to convert my best trip into old money, 72.4mpg, avg. Not bad for a 98. Not typical either admittedly.

Crikey!
Best I've done is about 65 (Imp) mpg on a sub-Nana-speed run down the coast to Dunedin, with a strong nor'easter over the port shoulder.

Since I rebuilt the fuel system I've not had much chance to use the bike.

I got a bit of commuting in this week, and I thought I'd do some fuel checking before I found out I'd got the fuel lines the wrong way round the hard way.

I have managed to return an average of 44mpg around town, and I got a long run in yesterday that I checked out and returned 59mpg.

It's happened to twice now, and I'm determined not to be left sitting by the side of the road, waiting for the RAC again.

I reckon if I rode like a granny I'd have done better, 4.4 - 5,5K in top on the motorway and the return journey on A roads not exactly hanging around you know. biggrin.gif

Good to get some miles in on a sunny afternoon.

mmmmmm

My 9'r is doing sub 50 mpg

48mpg to be exact

Not giving it a hard time, never been above 90mph and never got anywhere near the redline

No traffic, just country lanes and fast A roads

Have I got an issue?

I would not have thought there's an issue. I got 50mpg when I checked mine with similar riding conditions. There's the issue of the accuracy of petrol pump guages and bike odometers to consider.

I'm currently getting 50-56mpg with lower gearing and no O2 sensor, but rarely get a chance to go over 70mph for any duration.

rotflmmfao.gif Had the girlfriend pushing on hills......

I did this on a two up trip which was ridden very sedately, sticking to the speed limits & cruising. New emulsion tubes & slightly lower gearing would have helped immensely. Possibly the barely legal exhaust helped with breathing too. 100kmh @ 4000 rpm for hours.
It was quite weird pulling in for gas and bum recuperation & hardly putting any petrol in it.

Still running my 92 Mk1 TDM and love her. She has passed my age having done 76,000 miles now, and i don't hang about, has straight thru venom cans with a bolt in baffle so sounds good, a couple of the regular journeys i do are the same miles whether on her on my other bike or in my van. She had 32,000 miles on when i bought her and i have never touched the carbs, still doing around 60 mpg :)

My Mk1 850 gives about 48 mpg the 900 around 62 but with panniers fitted this drops to 56 but I get more smiles per twisty mile on the 850 :good:

If you are reading this in the US and feel inferior.... remember the US gallon is 83% the volume of an imperial gallon.

So... 0.83 x 59 = 48.97 (lets say 49)
I get about 43 mpg city and 55 mpg highway... not sure how that converts.
