When the Niner came out Yamaha claimed increased fuel economy over the Mk2, not what I found.  At touring speeds (around 120kmh) depending on conditions on my Niner I can get around 21ks per litre, around town/enthusiastic riding, around 17ks per litre. These figures are pretty much spot on with the fuel use on my Mk2.

I should add I used 91 ron fuel in the Mk2.  I use 95 ron in the Niner as advised to when I bought the bike.  So the Mk2 was cheaper to run fuel wise.  Not cheaper oil wise though.

With my 07 900 i can get under 4 lit / 100 km if i really have to, 4.5 l/100 km on average and never worse than 5.0 l/100 km per tank no matter how hard i ride. And i love to ride hard.

Not sure how the consumptions compare on general running around, but when touring at steady speeds of say 70-80mph, the 900 gives me a range of around 225-250 miles before the reserve light comes on.
From memory thats about 25 miles more than my previous mk2
TDM 900ABS, Suzuki DR250 twin-cam off-roader
Hers Honda XL1000, TTR250 off-roader

Jesus, I wouldn't want to guess what my MPG is!!...Terrible I'm sure...

I was ill a while back and those pesky medications put five stone on me!!

I've lost 1 1/2 now but I'm using the thought of treating myself to a Nitron shock and Gold valves as motivation to lose it all...

Its working might I add!!

I could lose a bit of weight if there's a Nitron shock at the end of it!

Here's my stats over 63 last fills.

The mpg varies wildly. I have put on about 15 kilos recently and the weather has improved so there's been some throttle wringing at mid-graph.

Best results obtained through attention to valve clearances, carb balance, suspension and tyres.

52 MPG average commuting (stop and go, some highway)

57 MPG best (pleasure cruising, taking it relatively easy)

Are you refining the stuff as you go along?

if I understand the question, yes, a little, minor tasks as they come now, but mostly just riding it (about 14,000 miles since last October)

I was shocked when I pulled 57 MPG

last winter, carbs were 100% renewed, new OEM fuel pump, valves were in spec, plugs, filter, lube cables, etc.

the carb rebuild was the major deal ($$$!!!!)

it's run very well since then

does require an eye on oil level

needs front rotor bobbins cleaned

needs handlebar mounts straighten

could use cosmetic work

My 93 MkI used to do 56 - 65 MPG.

Last 2 years something has happened and it does now 50 - 56.

Reality set in maybe? LOL

Perhaps posters could additionally specify their weight (in kilos), wind strength/direction, change in altitude etc. , so that a better picture could be drawn from the crazy broad range of mileage figures being announced here on this thread, that seem to cover the entire spectrum of the TDM range, Mk1 thru 900.

These figures, as given, would be serious news in the biking world.

There should be some accounting first, where the figures are established across a continuous period of time, a minimum number of uninterrupted fills, normal usage and then be able to be demonstrated.

nickodemon's question was - Whats the general mpg you guys get for the 850 and 900?

I don't think you could get more general than the figures I've seen so far.

I'm around 235 lbs.

Between saddlebags and cargo, add maybe 20 lbs. max

Highway speeds around 75-80 MPH

Acceleration normal (mixed, some heavy throttle)

Ambient temps from 10º F to 90º+ F

Average wind 15 MPH (?)

Laminar Lip installed on windshield

Before carb rebuild, averaging 41 MPG

Rebuild included FP needles, springs and tubes, OEM mains

OEM pump, float needles, choke ends, every gasket, seal, boot, connector, etc. (basically every part that could be replaced was)

Don't remember exactly where pilot and needles are set but was going for MPG not throttle response (although throttle response is excellent)

all other mechanical checks are in spec

52-57 MPG now

I check every tank fill

My 07 KLR 650 (bored to 685) averages around 50 MPG

To my experience, speed is the single most important factor (driving at low gears would, I guess, have the same effect). I myself rarely do steady speeds > 75mph, more frequently 50-60mph. I have observed increased consumption of about 10% when marching speed is increased from 65 to 75mph. Or thereabouts.

No use discussing consumption when someone is cruising at 50 and the other at 100  ;)

900 (08 ABS) top gear all the way on motorway (300 miles):@ 85 mph (mostly but including 35 miles of 50mph roadworks), big Givi topbox, Yamaha panniers & large Oxford tank bag , all fully loaded plus 110 kilos of me in riding kit = 68 mpg.

120 miles errrr spirited riding  + topbox only, inc. 55 miles of motorway = 55mpg

Were you heading South Alan ?  ;)    On my mk1, I managed 158 miles without hitting reserve, heading North East. :D  My front tyre was 2psi under the recommended pressure, I was wearing boot cut jeans that flapped at speed and I also have the square mk1 mirrors, cudda prolly got another 10 miles otherwise. :)

Just trying to make a point about mpg factors (did I mention the weather ?) I notice you didn't include your weight (being about half of mine, so PSI probably correct ) :P

Bootcut? Modern stuff. Where are your loons man?

Ahh the days of riding my RD, kickstarter up my flares, falling off at the newsagents cos I couldn't get my colliery boot down..........

  I have seen that trick in days gone past !

I thought you might get better consumption heading South, as it's downhill. :P

Ok, I'm 19 1/2 stone with kit on. Went for a blast on my 9er yesterday up the M1 to see how the buffeting had changed with the new screen. I did around 90 miles for around £8.

Not a clue what MPG that is!

Mpg, mph, miles, pounds, stones, psi, gallon uk vs gallons us... what a mess !

Here is a quick & simple conversion tool I made today : http://www.jbx9.16mb...hp?page=CONVERT

Use it until you decide to go metric !
