Ive still have the original shock on my 850. In keeping with original, I was thinking of having the internals rebuilt. Keep reading the factory shock was never that good although I have never really had any issues. Apart from that Nitron / Wilbers ?
the bottom eye can snap as can the damper rod. They are almost impossible to dismantle if they are years old and seized up. Nitron for me as they are hand built in the UK for your specific weight, riding style etc.
spyball alarm/immob, bluespot brake calipers and Stainless hoses, Fournales air adjustable shock with Remote Resevoir, forks raised 10mm thru yokes, racetech linear fork springs in 15 wt oil, Kappa wingrack/luggage, heated grips, Kedo handguards, dual heat controller to power heated jacket liner and or pants!!, Stebel 136DB horn, K&N air filter, colour matched Baglux tank cover (magnetic tank bag modified to fit cover), osram +50% headloight bulbs, headlight protector,"NitramSpecial" parking loight, tail light indicators all running on LED's & incorporate "Lite Buddies", MK7 Scottoiler fitted, taller screen, 2-2 stainless steel CCC's, Devil stainless down pipes. MKI Renntec engine crash bars & sump guard.
engine changed july 2007 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired.
I loike tay and hang sangwiches !

Nitron's a good choice, however a little cheaper is an M-Shock at £350 now they do a 2nd option at £450 which puts you into Nitron money, anyway mines a peach..

Done roughly 2k onnit, very happy but i spose any new shock is going to be a magic carpet ride compared to the age of most 850 shocks still in use, company is owned by some ex racer chappie who will advise over the phone, he also told me they are competing with Nitron on the track and comparing well... although made in France and owned by an English bod, spring metal comes from Sheffield..

Wilburs for me with hydraulic preload, but not cheap. It's been a fantastic shock fully adjustable everything smooth ride.
I kept my pristine genuine shock for when the Wilburs needs a rebuild.

Even better than the others if you can spend that much, i also had a Wilbers with hydraulic preload on the old 9r, excellent quality..

Cliff, you got to stop chucking bikes away in Spain.
Some Speedy Gonzales is riding around on your expensive shock, he robbed off the scrapped bike.

Looked at the G shock web site. Would you actually need separate compression / damping adjustment for normal road riding ?

Do you mean M shock Alan, no, seperate preload is not necessary, it's a bit of a luxury, useful if you regularly carry a pillion or carry a lot of camping gear for example, it's quick to adjust on the fly.

Yes M shock. They list two types for the 850. The more expensive has separate compression and rebound adjustment. The basic unit does this on one dial only
Righto gotcha now, that 2nd option is a new edition to his stock since i bought mine, choice is yours but for a £100 difference i would'nt bother for normal road riding, i mean how often will you realistically change it..

I never rode this mk1 on the original shock as when i had the bike delivered it was pissing oil everywhere, hence the new M shock, assuming your on an original oem shock a new one will make a whole heap of difference, i can only tell a difference from my previous 9r where i swapped the original oem shock at 20kish for a new shock, difference was night and day..... your shock is bound to be tired by now...
PS if you sift through the search function you may find a thread from fixitsan where he had an oem shock refurbed for around £100 if that helps.
Edit... here you go, it was actually for a 9r shock but i assume they could do an 850, you'll have to contact them..

We just had a chat about them, Dunfermline Motorcycles is no more, since the owner, and all his years of experience and fabrication skills retired together. I might try to find out if he still rebuilds shocks as a sideline though, he was the go-to man for a lot of classic trials bike owners because he handmade a lot of the parts from scratch to make good repairs and rebuilds
900 with better bits. Owes me nothing, Makes me smile
