2nd time changing this one fork seal and the b@stard keep leaking, I'm gonna have to try again at the weekend so anything else besides the obvious I need to look out for ?

2000 4tx

1st change a while back because it was leaky

2nd change last weekend because it was leaky but tried ATF instead of fork oil and after 2 days I noticed it pissed out on the way to work

Anyone else have anything similar happen ?

Is the leak faster because it's ATF ?

Any info welcome before I decide to drink the ATF

edit:  I can't find any nicks or scratches on the fork lowers

OEM fork seals?

No nicks or scratches but does the chrome look dull?

Has a bit of grit got in there and is allowing the ATF to leak?

Assume you did get the right ones? Don't laugh I did it once, a long time ago. Got the wrong internal diameter after a refurb. Only by a small amount but the difference between dry stanchions and copious amounts of fork oil everywhere.

What a pain eh !

Others have had similar problems using non-oem seals.

Are the fork bushes nice and tight, worn bushes could cause the fork seal to leak.

Worn bushes?

It could just be unlucky but best to eliminate oubt what afore another go.

Seal not upside down?
Measuring oil level with spring out, leg compressed?
Please excuse if eggs / grandmother applies.

I'll have to check bushes - What's the best method to determine excessive wear ?

Seal not upside down and air gap measured with spring out and leg compressed :)

Left fork is fine since last time, this time I just changed oil

+1 bushes. With the front wheel off the ground wiggle the forks about firmly , see if there's any play. Sometimes play is not evident unless the forks are compressed. For all they cost it might be worth doing them, splitting the forks on a mk2a almost certainly damages the bushes beyond repair

I renewed all my bushes before doing the seals (they did break up), not had an issue for 3 years now

I've esperienced this twice:

- Bent fork tubes (after a slight crash into back of car)

So twice I've bought fork seals. first from ebay then from fowlers, both were identical

So looking at the fowlers seals it appears they are oem

Now I need help to identify any other parts in the fork that might need to be replaced

Anyone want to take a look and point me in the right direction with part numbers please https://ie.fowlerspa...70-c/front-fork

The bushes are Metal Slide 1 and Metal Slide 2.  Wemoto might also sell a set of fork bushes for less wonga.

Gonna take a look at them as well. We need the correct one for my brother's fork as the new one from ebay didn't last long and showing signs of leaks. Got to finish installing first the new brake kit and dirt bike exhaust for the YZ450 project before we can work on his TDM.

New bushes and seal fitted again and 2 days without any oil leak so keeping fingers crossed, old bushes were goosed
Thanks for the advice, I've re-learned quite a bit about the inner workings of forks lately, it seems the best way to not make a fcuk up is to always replace the bushes when doing the seals, for the sake of a few quid it's worth it !
