Welcome aboard.  You've already made the 1st positive step to becoming a fully fledged member of the site:  posting photo's of your new bike in your 1st post :)

I picked up my 3rd TDM on Saturday, and will be slowly stripping down my 1st one for spares / part for sale.

Re your points:

1. Thermostat - this is behaving normally.  You'll find it sitting at the half way point pretty much all the time, unless is slow / stopped traffic when it will rise up to the top, with fan cutting in just before red (as described) once you're moving agian it will quickly drop back to normal...if the fan doesn't kick in then start looking for problems :)

2.  Hand Guards - Three main options here...BMW, DL650, XT1200 (Super Tenere).  The latter 2 are around £30-50 new from the respective dealers.  I believe the Tenere guards fit easier than the DLs as you dont need to machine the bar weights.

3.  Centre Stand - eBay, but be quick as when they appear they don't last long.

4.  Screen - If you search on here you'll find 1001 threads on the subject.  You best bet is to find some local Carpe members with different screens and see if they'll let you borrow / test ride with them before you spend money.  What works for one is horrid for another.

I've got a Yammy touring screen (i think the taller one) that I tried and didn't like

Points of note:

1.  Coils & HT leads tend to suffer after a while, normally just needs the HT leads "fettled" there's a really go thread on this in the KB - http://www.carpe-tdm...p?showtopic=268

2.  The Cold Start Mech has a habbit of sticking, meaning you don't get the higher starting rev's when cold.  It's easy to fix, but a sod to actually remove the part - Mr Henty (who you will soon come to know & buy from) on here does a replacement mounting bolt set that replaces the toffee bolts Yam fits.

3.  Rear caliper side chain adjuster bolt seizes in the swing arm.  Regular moving & greasing keeps this at bay.

4.  Chain slack - 40-50mm is good!!!

5.  Depending on where you keep the bike, and how regularly it gets a sensible run the battery seems to do 2-4 years service before it gives in (this is purely finger in the air science)  Symptoms are the bike happily turning over without ever starting  A quick charge will normally have the bike started, but then it reoccurs in a couple of days.

6.  Get yourself registered on JBX's site.  He's a TDM addict from France, who's built a spanking site with more info than you'll ever need to know about the bike...there's also downloads of the parts list, and the service manual - http://www.jbx9.t15.org/

The power commander will help with having the non standard exhausts, but you could always sell it to me if the bike runs ok without it !
As Dmmsta says, the thermostat seems fine and the fan is kicking in at the right time. An MRA varioscreen is my choice after the standard and touring versions I tried before. You picked the right colour, enjoy the bike and get to a fettle day so others can advise, admire and take the mick!

Thanks for the info, glad it's running correctly re the thermostat,
The hand guards are a must so i will get some purchased ASAP
Does the bike really need the power commander ?

Isn't a must have, but will help with the Arkra's and also prob iron out the low rev snatch that some experience.

Re the guards - someone did a write up on the Tenere ones, and included part numebrs!

Something to check...

Give your Yam main dealer a call with your bikes VIN number to check if it's had the TPS Recall done.

See sticky post at top of this forum for more info.

I'm finding the standard screen is fine up to 5k in top (all I'm allowed for the next 200 miles). :good:

All TDMs seem to suffer from lumpy running at low RPM to some degree IIRC some people have used a PC to combat that.

Mine will be getting the Airbox treatment as soon as the 600 ml service has been done (it is getting fecking annoying  in traffic and when filtering).

You're right about the fuel gauge, swops over to distance covered on reserve. Iirc you should be able to do
about 35/ 40 miles. Look in get togethers section for erm, get togethers in your area, or arrange a fettle day at your place, provide cake and they will come!

So 180 miles from £20 of fuel isn't to bad considering the exhaust and PC,

Sounds about bang on. I used to get 200-220 to a tank with 2-1 Fuel Exhaust and a few tweaks.

Glad you're enjoying it. They really are under rated.

chain adjuster bolt seizure can be solved by making a set of marine brass ones. The right side has a bad habit of seizing and breaking off in the swingarm due to a stupid selection of materials by yamamah san. Mild steel bolt in alloy thread, add salt water..... Go easy with it if it's stuck.

The CSM will stick easy to sort if you have the right tools and a small rubber boot can be fitted to stop the crap getting in there again.

it's all fixable, the problems are few and can be solved fairly easily.

If you want to fit bmw 1150gs handguards the bar ends need to be drilled 6.8mm and tapped M8 x 1.25.

This is easy if you have access to a lathe I have.

Wish I had got one sooner, had a DL1000 V-Strom which I didn't get on with also has a 1150GS but that was just brand snobbery,
I am truly amazed at the TDM, 180 miles in one go and not a bit of knee or arse ache

Hey, lots of good advice here, nothing I could add to that. One thing did catch my eye, could you explain why you did not get on with DL1000? Was it ergonomics, engine or ..?

In short I am looking for every bit of information so I could understand why TDM appeals to me and bunch of other people.

I have not ridden DL1000 but sat on it and rolled around with both original and DL650 saddle. With Wee saddle it was ergonomically very similar to TDM, if not even wee bit lower ;) I've always thought that DL1000 is height wise unreachable to me, being 5'9". But I digress.. looking forward to hearing from you.

They are great bikes. There are many lumpy running cures. I have just got used to mine. It ticks all the boxes.
