I currently own 2 850 4tx models with fairly low mileage.Last year I bought, from a chap on this site,a 4tx with over 100,000 miles. It was advertised for £500 pounds a number of replies about the bike, some puzzling, some silly but none buying.I bought it,very pleasant seller and the bike was in better condition than expected.Rode it home, about 50 miles,She ran as well as my 26,000 miler.I put about a thousand miles on her,and now my Grandson is using her as a commuter/fun bike.
I am confident that other tdm will see me out,and I'm only 74 .Don't be afraid of high mileage, they will go for a very high mileage if given a little care and oil.

Can't find it now but I remember seeing photo on the web of the speedo from a TDM 900 showing 200,000km. Regular oil changes and keep an eye on the cam chain tensioner. My process is to trawl posts and note issues associated with my bikes. I saw many posts regarding the failure of the water pump at around 42,000km on my previous KLE500. I changed the pump at 40k, problem averted.
yep if you trawl and take notes then you are fore warned and fore armed.

195 euros to change a disc, pads and bearing seams a bit steep? Have you tried doing the work yourself. The guys on here are a wealth of knowledge. Makes it easier in that the TDM is pretty easy to work on. A few of the right spanners an sockets is mostly all you need.
Just make sure your bike had the tensioner changed. Don't know about where you are but it was done over here by Yamaha (recall(?)).

But add to that 80 for the disc, 30 for the pads, a good 20 for the bearings and a few carrier bolts plus the labour... adds up.
I could have done it myself: I have done before but its just the hassle and time factor. Ill have plenty of opportunities to get oily soon enough.
As for the tensioner, Id understood it wasnt a recall issue. Thats what I read on JBXs site. Either way its not been done on my bike so far!

Sounds pretty reasonable when you spell it all out. Do you get the wheel balanced after the new tyre is fitted ? I allus do, costs me £10 to have tyre fitted to loose wheel and free balance. Or, free fitting and £10 for the balance. Costs a few quid to dispose of old tyre too.

Prices for parts seem comparable for what you would by online so that seems fine, assuming for 80 splongs you got a gold rear disc though paid about that for my Brembo.

The rear disc is either EBC or Brembo. Cant remember. I know the one that came off was EBC. So this is the bikes third disc on the back and the shop owner felt this was due to a diet of sintered brake pads, hence the organics I bought instead.
Its got organics up front and the bike does pull up sharpish.
They also cleaned the brake pots. Id already done it but not every speck. They were well polished this time.
Apparently the DOT 4 needs replacing! Now this was a surprise as I replaced the fluid last weekend with stuff from a brand new tub but apparently it was doing a good impression of brown goo. So it seems likely the hoses were so fouled up that yet more gunk has come out since doing the bleed.
I think the state of the linkages were more a reflection on the climate than the due care of the previous owner!!

Did we decide it wasn't a good idea using stainless steel bolts for brake discs?

You can buy sets of stainless or titanium on eBay, don’t need to know the size. Make sure you use heat to get the old ones out, good luck getting them all out without any snapping!

I've done 147,000ks on my Niner. Doesn't use oil, original cam chain. Other than consumables, two sets of fork seals and shock recently rebuilt. Recently had valve clearances checked (two valves slightly out) mechanic said he couldn't believe how good the motor looked.
