OK....so naughty person goes stir crazy...

Been landlocked for the N weeks like everyone else - or, at least those that are considered sufficiently decrepit through age..

.....so, today, and in what passes for desperation, I felt driven to ‘saddle up‘ and give it a reprehensible / quasi-illegal whirl...

Had it in my subconscious to head for the Ace cafe....which is on the opposite side of The Smoke from where I reside....

though the remnants of my good sense never intended  for me to stop by for a sampling of their delectable egg ‘n chips

.....not this time.

Such a joy was it, to be out on the open road, so much of an immersive experience, that I distractedly missed my non-destination...

but clocked up a mere thirty seven miles of rediscovery of the joy of it all...

BUT

what I also rediscovered (there’s no such thing as unmitigated pleasure) is that my  hands....‘specially the left one,

suffer increasing discomfort, pain and numbness,  as the miles mount up.....partly, I guess, through taking the weight of my ‘forward lean’

-perhaps a set of bar-risers might help with that?.... but also because my hands are small and, since I can’t feel comfortable at the notion of not ‘covering the clutch’, and, as far as I can tell, I’ve adjusted the lever for minimum span.....

I’m a bit stuck...

Any ideas?

(there you are, that was almost an entire chapter of closely written semi-drivel)

....interesting thought   Lee.... tell me more

in the meanwhile, need to assess  whether bar risers will help take the weight off my hands

 - ironically, they’re touted as taking load off your back.

some people grip the bars too toightly and end up with sore digits and palms,  i used to do this but learned to relax my grip which helps.

I'd be interested in that idea too as ms gives me a weak and slow left hand, is it just a suggestion or something you have done?

.....hhmmmm....don’t think I grip too tightly, but, the combination of a wide clutchlever-to-bar gap and small hands, seem to mean fingers are always stretched out

to ‘cover the clutch’  and combined perhaps, with the weight of my forward lean, causes  my left hand to ache....

Bar risers will help a little. Oh and practice not covering the clutch, ya only really need to cover it at really low revs.

I've got 2 sets of risers, one for up and one up and back. I've also got something that goes in line on the clutch cable (I've tried to see what it's called and where I got it from but can't find it, sorry!) that make the pull on the clutch easier. I tried hydraulic but gave up after two separate attempts as both were heavier than the cable!

There is a Magura/Hymec hydraulic clutch conversion by Venhill. You want 8mm neck 65-67 mm rod for slave cylinder. Reduces effort by 20%. You will also need the optional clutch switch too.
Downside is the circa £330 cost unfortunately.

Although I don't think clutchless shifting does the gearbox much good, sometimes I get lazy and give my hand a rest. 6 gears is 5 lever pulls in quick succession.

I probably wouldn't do it with a new bike.

Hopefully there's no penance

My first bike was '64 Jawa 350, it had the shifter coupled to the clutch - which was only needed from standstill. Never got it on the road, though 😐

I just bought a ZX9R clutch master cylinder with hose and clutch pull slave from ebay, will see if it makes life any easier and report back when done, assuming I can get it to fit nice.

£55 has to be better that £330.
