So..., I bought an endless chain and looking at the guides in here, it seemed a pretty easy job to take the swingarm off and put on the endless chain (and lube/service the swingarm and suspension linkage at the same time, plus new rear tire).

Let me start by saying that it is possible to remove the swingarm on the ABS model without removing exhaust cans and rear shock absorber. However, it is NOT easy...

First of, I decided not to remove the shock as the top mount is very difficult to get to. You would have to remove battery, battery box, seat latch, various electrical parts and maybe also the coolant reservoir..

Then there is the rear brake line that goes through the swingarm and are part metal/copper tubing, i.e. not flexible.. On top of that, you have the wire for the rear ABS sensor to deal with (getting the sensor out of the rear wheel hub, was also a pain in the ***).

Anyway, I got it all off in the end, with the shock and exhaust cans in place.

After a good clean and lube, the real trouble started: Getting the bugger back on!!!!!

Sorry for the rant, just had to get it out of my system.. It all ended good and changing the rear tire was actully very easy. I could get the new tire on without the use of tire irons. Never had that happen before.

I dodged greasing the swingarm bearings last year - and the previous five! - for the apparent dificulties you note, but this January bit the bullet.

I removed my single exhaust can, left the shock in place and disconnected the swingarm linkage plus removed that and greased it all. I unbolted and wangled the ABS stuff out of the way and got the arm off OK, but had a problem with releasing the RHS bearing adjuster. JBX's needle nose plier method did not work, so I made a peg tool from an old spark plug spanner.

I have an EazyRizer lift and that allowed me to get under the whole thing to see what I was doing - and give it all a good clean.

I'll not bother it again for a couple of years!
