You're correct , the emulsion tube is where the needle slides in and out and over time the tube becomes oval causing rough running and increased fuel consumption. My bike has done 33000 miles and is fine but on some other bikes they have worn out by 20000. They can be purchased from Yamaha and can be fitted by a reasonably competent home mechanic although it takes a while to get the bike apart and back together again.
As for the timing chain tensioner , I don't think there have been many problems. The main thing with the TDM is to keep an
eye on the oil level. Some use quite a lot , others , like mine don't use much at all. If it drops too low it can cause big end and crank failure.
If you keep the oil level up and change the oil and filter level regularily then the motor shouldn't break.
The regulator/rectifier on the Mk1 has been known to fail. Again , these are available and easy to fit.
If the bike you're looking at is in good condition and doesn't smoke or rattle I would consider it.
I'm sure the others will be along with more advice.

Hi and welcome
You're right as to purpose: for tube location see post #15 in this thread: http://www.carpe-tdm...o...c=6596&st=0
Replacement is "traditionally" best with Factory Pro tubes (from Straightline Racing: Carpe discount) together with Yamaha OEM needles.

The Emulsion Tubes are also known as Needle Jets. They're the bit the needle sits in to meter the fuel flow. I guess the reason they wear must be vibration of the needle against it. They end up with a slightly oval hole instead of a circle, and the engine runs rich as a result. The usual replacement are the ones made by Factory Pro (believe they're an American company so should be easily avaialble over there), which are made of a harder metal and don't seem to wear in the same way. I replaced mine at 52000 miles and it's made a noticable difference to my fuel economy and improved the power at low revs.
I think I'm the only person on the forum who's had problems with the cam chain tensioner on a Mk1. Somehow the spring on the ratchet has managed to jam the ratchet so it won't auto tension. When I heard the chain starting to knock a bit I simply pulled the tensioner out, freed it, and put it back in. It may well have jammed again in which eventually I'll start to hear it knocking as it loosens up and will have to do the same if I don't get round to replacing it first.
Other things to check are:
Oil consumption - they all use oil, half a litre per thousand miles is fairly common. Much more than that could indicate someone let it get low and caused some damage.
Front sprocket nut - some have had problems with the front sprocket nut comming loose, only seems to have occoured with aftermarket sprockets though.
Regulator/rectifier - If it fails it will fry the battery, might be worth checking the voltages.

Located in the bottom of the engine below the pistons, pistons connect to it via the con-rod(s).
