I introduced myself in the Noob section but I'll start again here as I need to know all about TDM  mark ones. So, my name is Jared and I live in Portland Oregon. I'm 49 (I know, already.) I'm  married and have 3 children and 2 grandchildren. I'm an  electrician by trade and  do mostly commercial construction.

I have had lot's of bikes including Honda 350 twins and a four, Four 750  SOHCs, a VFR750, MZ Mastiff, which is the only one I really regret selling on. I've had an XS650, BMW airhead, K100, and others. My last  bike was a V65 Sabre and my main bike  for the last 5 years has  been a KLR 650 that I commute on and have 44 thousand miles on it now.

I bought this TDM and the PO  told me it had charging issues that he had had sorted out. Well  they're not but no big deal. I've started the fantastic diagnostic directions that I found in another post here and I'm thinking  it's RR at this point  but I need to do more testing today. I know  from  previous experience that a modern electronic RR is sort of interchangeable between bikes and was wondering if anyone here has had  experience with say an R1 RR as replacements.

My next  question is about luggage. Do MK 2 Givi racks fit the MK 1? I saw this bike on a google search and really like the look of this luggage. More importantly so does my wife.

Is there a such thing as a master Givi catalogue?

This is the UK Givi online catalogue:- http://www.givi.co.uk/my-motorcycle

The same catalogue appears for the home Italian version (givi.it) but with their language.

Givi dealers used to have a thick catalogue with all the stuff and all the spare parts shown. That has been superseded by the online version, but it doesn't show what used to be available but is no longer.

It only shows the 850 for 1996 - 2001 as currently available.

Others may know about suitability for the earlier model, but the dates quoted suggest there was a version for the original 850 different to the one shown.

Thanks, that's  basically what I found out too. Anyone here with a  Pic of their  rear stock MK2 rack that I can  compare to my MK1 rack?

Does this old UK eBay item help? Click on the image for a bigger view.

There may be more pix in UK / European eBay sites, since there were more TDMs sold over here (and particularly in Europe where they were common) than your side of the pond.

Also Google found this, but the full advert is no longer visible:-

Hi Scout,  i would think the MK2 rack would fit your 3VD MK1.

spyball alarm/immob, bluespot brake calipers and Stainless hoses, Fournales air adjustable shock with Remote Resevoir, forks raised 10mm thru yokes, racetech linear fork springs in 15 wt oil, Kappa wingrack/luggage, heated grips, Kedo handguards, dual heat controller to power heated jacket liner and or pants!!, Stebel 136DB horn, K&N air filter, colour matched Baglux tank cover (magnetic tank bag modified to fit cover), osram +50% headloight bulbs, headlight protector,"NitramSpecial" parking loight, tail light indicators all running on LED's & incorporate "Lite Buddies", MK7 Scottoiler fitted, taller screen, 2-2 stainless steel CCC's, Devil stainless down pipes. MKI Renntec engine crash bars & sump guard.
engine changed july 2007 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired.

Thanks  for the links Steve. That  photo  was  very helpful.  I'm hoping it does Wicklamulla as Givi still sells it.  I'm sure I could make it work anyway. I'll get one and post  pics  when it's on.  Now  for a  regulator /rectifier. The  stock one seems pretty tiny and is  missing a diode. I'm  going with a  larger one  from an  R6 or something . I  did that for my VFR and it worked fantastically  considering it the R6 RR actually had  cooling fins.

I got a Givi Wac for my mkII but then fitted it to me mkI.  That is not ed zackery helpful as it was never fitted to the mkII but I would have bought (ebay) a mkII rack I guess and it did fit the mkI.

Thought the Givi wing racks in particular were a generic fit ( so could buy 2nd hand) and the fitting kit was different between the models of bike !!! The fitting kit on the mk1 and mk2 i believe is a linking bar under the seat,, would'nt be hard for someone to fabricate, would just need a photo i guess and measurements...

Scout i mean this kind you can see the fitting kit in pic 1 and 3 which braces the rack, you would need an appropriate one for the mk1, anyway another option.

Aha, I knew it has just a simple thing simple like  that. Now to hunt one down. I did get an RR from an FZR600 today to try out on the TDM.

And it worked like a charm.

I  bought a  wing rack and  a  monolock  rack mount which  has the under seat  bracket.  I'm  pretty  sure I can  fab the  drop  down  supports  for the side case mounts.  And my  son in law is a fantastic  welder. I'll have to  post a pic of the  brake  switch bodge the PO  made to it  pretty  ingenious.  It makes  me  wonder what else is going on in there. I'm  pretty  sure I'll be looking for  an r6 fuel pump and the  emulsion tubes and  needles. I've  been reading the  TDM riders  thread on  ADV too.

I changed the emulsion tubes in the TDM carbs and Wow. No 3000-4500 RPM
snatchiness and smooth as glass acceleration all the way to 8000 with an
awesome pull from 6000 to red line.
Thanks to all of you folks that  post your trials and fixes to make it easy to figure things out.

Hello, Portland

You and me and one other bloke, that I have heard of, with TDMs here in town. Mine is a red 1992 that I like a lot. Found her in Washington outside of Olympia last summer on Craigslist. It was originally sold in California, as it has smog stuff on. I had read of them over the years in the cycle mags, and took a gamble on it. Where did you get yours? Eugene? It is in the shop now for a big service job, getting ready for a trip to Texas in April.

Hey Dhatfiel, I got  mine in  here in  town from  CL. I'm having a  good time getting it ready for spring. I've had  it out a  couple of times, the  last  after replacing the  emulsion tubes and  Wow  what a  difference.

Hey Scout

Did not reply until now because I have been in the hospital for a week. As soon as I got the bike back, I wanted to take her out. Wife and I went for coffee, and I laid it down!!. Wife is fine, bike has a cracked crankcase cover; that seems extent of damage, other than the odd scratch here and there. And I broke my wife's fall with my ribs. Broke 5, and needed hospitalization for pain control!! I hit some slimy mud against the curb trying to avoid a speed bump. I was doing about 5mph, trying to smooth the ride for wife. So the lesson is, take the bump, stay away from the curb.

There goes my ride to TX for MotoGP. Have to fly now.
