Torqued head bolts today, checked valves and changed a cupla tight shims on the Inlets, put it all back together put anti freeze in and it pissed out of the thermostat-cylinder head coolant pipe all over me rocker cover from the cylinder head where the pipe bolts in, pulled it to find the nose where it bolts in a bit bent and out of shape, straightened that and put it all together to now find the pipe is fowling on the fan cowling so i cant get the radiator mounted back, took the radiator of with it's mounting frame, will dismantle the radiator from the frame and try that but it looks like i have a bent pipe, i struggled originally to get the thermostat bolted in, now i know why, guess i got lucky that time..also did an oil change, have to drop that now to check if it's contaminated...

 

Never had or heard of this before.........fookin typical innit  :rotflmmfao:  :rotflmmfao:  i have to laugh or i'm gonna cry...

Poor design bud. Easy to misalign the pipe AND distort it too. Done it on the 9er (3x) and the 4tx.(1x) Have cursed the little so n so wot thought it was a good idea or that'll do

Never heard of it before Al, got a few things to do then i'll have a look, need to take the rocker cover off and fit it as it's so awkward to see down that well, glad i'm not the only one then... is it likely the oil got contaminated !

Never spoiled the oil for me.

Worth checking the end of the pipe for ovality - I learnt (eventually), to fully seat the pipe by hand rather than use the screw to pull it into place as this can skew the pipe.

Don't forget to tighten the hose clip too  :good:

The pipe has a little ding in it so i'll fix that, okay cheers matey.

Actually the pipe end was well mullered, more hexagonal than round, tapped that back to round and straightened the tongue again, rocker cover off to fit it so i could see it and went in with a nice push with some resistance, radiator mounted without an issue now so, a quick spot of lunch and refill with water 1st, drop the oil from the sump to check it's okay, fingers crossed..

Water tight now, filled with water to test, now with diluted anti freeze, prolly about to - 10 only, for now......dropped the oil from the sump and got 1200ml  :huh:  that aint normal, left some in a glass jar to settle and i think theirs some antifreeze in it, not much so, i'll have to drop me brand new running in oil ffs that's £20 up the swannie, so do i order more running in oil or throw in 10w40 semi which i have, after running in 300 miles !!!!!!  :um: thoughts anyone..

I did 100 mile son my running in oil, then I went for a shell brand oil which is not as good as my usual smith and allen branded oil.

 

Out of curiosity, did you get any more turns on your head bolts?

 

Just done a cyl head on a corsa 1.2 DOHC and they don't even specify a retorque. No valve adjustment either as it hydraulic tappets.

Cheers drewps, i have the same smith and allen was a 20 litre so i'll bung that in, 300 miles not so gently but not manic, had a good quality sump magnet which picked up swarf..

 

Head bolts were fine at the proper torque, clicked right off the bat, will check them one more time down the road though...oh for hydraulic tappets eh.

Doin valve clearances? Use dappers valve shim exchange program and the job will be carroty - Free (other than you postin me yer shims) for sporting members.

Dabs.....Give the feck up and buy an electric bike.....Nah only jokeing,I have never used running in oil just straight mineral for 100 miles then another lot upto 500 then fully synth just ride the bike normally,give it some and shut the throttle to put pressure on the rings,so at 300 I would put normall mineral oil in just to finish it off. :good:

Mineral oil is used as it knocks off the high spots in the bore, synthetic is so good now running would never happen.
Modern ceramic bores synthetic oils very little wear happens at all. Hence Niners go 100K few issues.
2002 900 silver,oil pressure switch with brass 90 degree conversion, RG fork protectors. Wilburs custom made rear Shock with remote hydraulic preload and RG shocktube, Wilburs front springs. Scotoiler with a custom made swing arm delivery unit.
