Sump Leak

Righto wot to do about this, both mating surfaces, the sump pan and crankcases were vapour blasted and perfectly clean, before fitting they had a wipe down with acetone and fitted to torque spec with torque wrench, also used home made gasket, after finding the initial leak i replaced the gasket with a pattern gasket and applied blue hylomar letting it gas off for about 15 mins before installing the cover again, the leak has returned, albeit to a lesser degree..

 

I've considered leaving it now until i need my 1st initial oil change but not sure if that's detrimental, how much pressure is the sump actually under, lots or not lots.....

 

The leak is directly at the centre front bolt area and nowhere else, should i consider using summit like permatex this time around ?

 

The specific bolt does'nt appear to have been overtorqued at any time and seems to snug up nicely but i wondered if a helicoil would make certain of that...

 

Suggestions welcome...

As rally says. Suspicious leak at same place with diff gaskets!

Doin valve clearances? Use dappers valve shim exchange program and the job will be carroty - Free (other than you postin me yer shims) for sporting members.

Are you talking about the area highlighted here? Is the dowel seated wrong and and holding it off slightly? The whole thing could be slightly distorted as castings like that often are, you could clean it up and run a marker pen around the face then go over with a fine flat stone and check for low spots, anywhere with marker pen left will be low.

Would it be feasable to get a skim taken off it?

I have flourescent dye penetrant crack testing stuff at work if you want it checked for cracks, they usually stand out like a sore thumb under the uv light..

Actually managed to have a chat with Lee and that was his 1st thought, although before it came off the bike it was leak free, i suppose that's possible though but how the crack has manifested would be a mystery, defo not over torqued.

engine changed july 2007 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired.

Hi Dave, yep matey exactly that bolt highlighted, it's difficult to see but it seems to pool on the case above that bolt, sure it's not a dowel as was quite particular but will double check, i'll do as you suggest with a marker pen and flat stone that's a good tip, so possibly a slight warp maybe, then a skim if needed,have a few flat stones knocking about for knife sharpening, assume grit grade just the same as sand paper.

 

Plan after chatting with Lee is to redo once i change from running in oil to regular and keep an eye on the oil level, and when refitting use some specific type of goo he knows of..

 

Ps Will hold off on the crack testing dye until i've checked it out, if it happens again after the next fix i'll replace the sump cover..

If you intend to leaf (personally I would sort it now). Be careful as a "little" leak with 5mins running ain't so little after 50mins. Also directly in lion with exhaust and rear tyre!

If it needs a light skim I can do it on the miller for you Cliff.

Scotoiler with a custom made swing arm delivery unit. Don't know if it's any help but I had this problem on mine after an oil and filter change,just one or two drops from the same area.

I took it off again changed the gasket for a Yamaha gasket and very carefully tightened up the bolts in the pattern suggested in the manual to avoid distortion. Result no leak.

Cheers, could it be one of those places that just requires an OEM gasket maybe !!

Knowing your luck I'd say yes, it probably is. :lol:  At least you can rule out the gasket if an oem one is fitted and it still leaks.

 

Is running in oil a different viscosity to the usual stuff ?

Sealant is Loctite 5660 specifically for sealing crank cases.
I'll donate a tube as I got a boxfull when I ordered 1 to do my Enfield.

Aint that the truth :lol: Lee's popping the magic stuff in the post. Running in oil viscosity, suprisingly not, the one i have is 10w40 mineral..
