Yamaha has issued a press release announcing safety recalls for models including the XV1600 Wild Star, R1, FZ6, FJR1300, TDM900, MT-01, XV1700 and XT660R/X.
The release is reproduced in full below, and all owners of affected machines will be contacted by Yamaha to advise them of the steps needed to rectify their machines.

"As part of Yamaha’s policy of constantly monitoring the quality and performance of its products, the factory has instigated 2 Product Safety Recalls.
The first of these Safety Recalls has identified a potential defect in the gearbox of certain XV1600 Wild Star models. In extreme cases, this defect could result in the transmission locking with possible loss of control by the rider. As our Customers’ safety is of paramount importance, riders are advised to stop using their machines until they have been modified by an Authorised Yamaha Dealer.
XV1600 owners on our database will receive a letter very soon advising them of the steps to take to have their machines rectified.
The second Safety Recall concerns the Throttle Position Sensor fitted to certain YZF-R1, FZ6N/S, FJR1300/A, TDM900/A, MT-01, XV1700PC & XT660R/X manufactured between 2002 and 2005. In a small number of cases, the idle speed may become intermittently unstable, causing the engine to stall.
In the same way as the XV1600 Safety Recall, owners of the affected machines, held on our database, will receive a letter very soon advising them of the steps to take to have their machines rectified. They can continue to use their motorcycles in the meantime.
On behalf of the Yamaha Factory and Yamaha Motor UK, we would like to apologise to all affected customers for this inconvenience and assure them of our best attention to rectify the problems at the earliest possible time."

My TPS was replaced by Yamaha and it was doing exactly what this says. The bike was out of warranty so Yanaha paid for the part and I paid for the labour. Wonder if they would refund the cost of the labour? Got to ask, I suppose.

Is the 'TDM900/A' the ABS model?

So - for the avoidance of doubt (in other words I am clueless) does this recall only affect ABS models?

And if so why? Do they have a different TPS? unsure.gif

Well, that I can't answer because i don't know...

Ok - think I'll call me local dealer and see what they say. But on the Yamaha UK website there's no mention of the TDM recall, only the XV1600. Mine is a 2002 and doesn't have the stalling problem so maybe I should just ignore it. unsure.gif

Engine stalling, no. Unstable idle speed, yes. Asked the dealer about this last week and he thought it might be the temp sensor that determines how much the revs should be when starting the bike. But reading the Yamaha press release I imagine it might be the throttle sensor problem.

The guys on the Fazer Owners Club - Unofficial have been documenting this problem with the new shape Fazer. There have been a number of failures around the 18 - 20k mile mark upwards.

1 - Snatchy throttle response.
2 - Idle speed dropping and becoming irregular.
3 - The bike spluttering and trying to stall when throttling off and slowing down during normal riding.
4 - The bike cutting out when the engine gets hot e.g. in town riding, waiting at traffic lights etc.
5 - Same as the above but the bike will not start again, needing ten or more minutes to cool down first.
6 - Finally the ECU registers a fault code and the unit is 'officially' in need of replacement.

That's pretty much how it happens.... One owner on the site (mentioned in the post) is on her second Fazer and fourth TPS!!!

Just as the FZ6N/S denotes the Naked and Faired models, I think the the TDM900/A includes both ABS and non-ABS models. The TPS has nothing to do with the braking system and the ABS model has only been out a short while. Best way to check is to call your Stealership with a chassis number to hand and check. The info. should have been released to them today.

hey guys..i'm new to the forum...

anyway,back to the topic,yeah...i do faced the problems above..my idling is not stable...and wen i was slowing down and dropping to the low gear,bike sometimes will stalled...

been riding my TDM for almost a yr now...bike is closest to the nicest thing i have,except for this problems smetimes its very distrubing...

Yup, I recognise these - I had a spell 4 - 6 weeks ago when the engine cut out a lot when e.g. stopping at junctions. Annoying but not dangerous - and it's calmed down since.

If it's a recognised problem I will get it fixed!

I'd say the "/" means the 900 and the 900A
Mine has been having this problem and when it happens the clock resets to 1.00 and the trip meter to zero

Just phoned my local dealer and getting my TPS changed - bike now just over 3 yr old.
No quibble, he checked the frame number and it came within the batch. He's replaced a few R1 TPS sensors in the past but no 900s.

I would advise those who've done the airbox mod to put it back temporarily, especially under warranty huh.gif

I've just come back from my dealer. It seems that for TDM it's not a problem on every single bike. They have to take a look at the TPS to see whether it needs replacement. That's easy enough as it is visible even without taking the fairing of on the LHS of the bike (with a little help of a flashlight and a good eye). 5 minutes of work to check whether yours needs replacing.

I have an appointment next friday to have it replaced. The dealer couldn't tell me yet how long he would need to replace it as it would be the first time he ever had to do it on a TDM and the TPS isn't that easily accesible for replacement on the 900. But it shouldn't take too long as he said he'll do it while I wait.

That's right, both the regular and the ABS version can suffer from the faulty TPS. Mine is a reg and will have TPS replaced next week.
