I don't think yer piston rings are cast iron so go tell Eugene to do one. All a load of toilet as far as I'm concerned. Now stop searching for stuff that worries you and get on with doing the job 'properly'. Or, take Eugene's advice and don't bother honing and fitting new piston rings and then we'll all see how much oil yer steed uses.

Stripped one of my cars down a few years back. The bores were definitely glazed - like a dark gold/yellow deposit. Gave 'em a light cleaning up (honing) with a tool made for cleaning the glaze on the bores and replaced the rings with oversized ones after giving the bores a good clean to get rid of any residue. This was under the guidance and advice of a very experienced mechanic.
Diesel engines that have been run on mix of vegetable oil and derv have been found to have a glaze on the bores, I've been reliably told.

From what I can find, piston rings are made from cast iron and steel. The cast bit is "grey modified cast iron" apparently. "The properties of grey modified cast iron mostly depend on the structure formed during the casting process. In order to improve the mechanical characteristics of the rings, centrifugal casting with subsequent heat treatment is applied. To improve the material properties, a small amount of chrome, copper, molybdenum, vanadium and tin additives are used."
The article mentions" begin the process of polishing which will be completed by the rings and even the pistons themselves." Would have thought if the pistons are hitting the bores that would indicate ring failure?
Must admit that if I got a re-bore I wouldn't hone the bores.
Oh and another quote:
"Honing creates fine crosshatch imperfections on the surface of the cylinder bore. ... These are essential because it helps the cylinder wall retain oil to assist with piston ring lubrication. Theoretically, the idea is for there to be a very thin layer of oil between the edge of the piston rings and cylinder wall."

I had a local place hone the bores on mine when I did the rings in 2008, I'm assuming it hasn't blown up since.
Annoyingly I don't know what mileage it was on at the time but I'm guessing around 60k. What's it on now Studders?

60,200 Chris. Still using very little oil.
Only kidding about the mileage. It's actually done 79,768 miles and uses very little oil. Rest of the bike is falling to pieces though.

BUT do check for oval when at machine shop - once had a set returned that was clearly oval BEFORE measuring em ho hum....

Think he's more likely to rehone and rebore no more now Favs. Agree about getting the bores measured at the shop, they have the specialist measuring equipment, super accurate.

Just did what the guy told me. I think the rings were slightly bigger but I've no idea how much, I got the rings he told me to get.
Jobs I've done since then have been to replace pistons and rings (and all the bearings), crank regrind, etc.
