Hello all,
Can anyone recommend a good and fast riding route from the south of England to Scotland? Let's say Basingstoke to Moffat for example.
Previous Scotland trip was a motorway slog to Moffat, stayed there overnight, then fun starts from there north, and stops there when returning south. But I don't really want to do that slog again there and back.
I don't mind a bit of motorways, but not much of an idea on a good and fast route up that avoids them. Snag is I would be leaving midday from work and hope to get to B&B in Moffat in the evening not too late as up early the next day for the Scottish roads!
Any ideas appreciated!

Problem is the time frame, if your leaving at midday to get to Moffat and want to arrive not to late then i'm afraid you've no option but to take the motorway, any deviation from that will have you arriving in Moffat quite late, mind the chippy is great and caters to the pub crowd at throwing out time..love Moffat.

I'm with Dablik on this one - if you leave midday you'll need to take the motorways unless you don't mind arriving after dark (even at this time of year AND travelling North), c'est ce que c'est

I agree. Bite the bullet and use the M-way - Google maps says 5hrs46mins. Add fuel and stretch stop, that's 6hrs = 6pm @ Moffat.
Fuel up, check the bike, eat, doss down early for a quick start the next am.
Then avoid the M74 by using the old A74 beside it - you should be able to save time doing that, wink wink. Just watch for the bends where the road crosses over the M-way. See here:- https://goo.gl/maps/ccNpjRgtdD8tm7vn7
Where are you going up here?

Thanks for linky steve27bha, looks good. Was meant to go earlier in the year but too much going on. Thinking sometime mid-late Sept, hopefully can get a window of reasonable weather...
Thanks for replies people!
Google motorway route says 5:43 and 345 miles
Google avoiding motorway 8:30(!) and 371 miles
Had a click around on googlemaps and best I could come up with for reasonable time is this:
A34 to M40, one junction on M40 then A43 to Northampton, then A5/M1 to Doncaster, A1 to Scotch Corner, then through North Pennines on A66 then B roads to Alston, then A74(M) to Moffat
6:48 and 360 miles, so only about an hour longer than all motorway but it's still mostly motorway
Here it is:

I can't remember the exact route, but I found it was best to get the Motorway up to Nottingham area and then go cross country from there. Non motorway routes further south are just so slow.
