So anyone do it ? fixed directly to grab rail that is....

Used two plates to get desired height
Probably not much help unless you have the same style of rail / rack
If you do nuts + bolts couple of metal strips - sorted

Cheers Andy, l've been sizing it up I think I'll just drill the grab rail and be done with it, no plans to sell the bike and I'd rather if it was as secure as possible as I'm commuting every day now

I've done mine (3vd) by drilling the grab rail. I lined up the two rear holes so the nut goes in between the cast webbing underneath. I made a lateral support on the front part with the mounting plate bolted on to. With the mounting plate on (Givi) you cant see any drill holes and i even managed to hide the cableing for the led extra brake light i installed on the mounting plate itself. I'll try and see if i've got photos of when i did it. It's never come loose or caused any problems and I think a damn sight neater than all the bracketry that most after market top boxes come with.

Directly to the grab rail when I bought it.  SHAD, not GIVI.

Knew I'd done it before but couldn't remember which bike. :)  The bracketry came with the plate iirc.

My old 850 had the top box fitted directly to the grab rail with no issues.

2012 900 - Still adding shiny bits. Was black, changed to white and now back to black again.

Fitted the top box base plate directly to the grab rail with bolts. And then attached box when required

Hi JMC,
I have taken some photos of my top box mounting. On the third photo you can just make out the edge of the cross bracket I bolted on the original rack for the plate to bolt on to. Hope it helps.

Sorry about the sideways photos :)

Thanks lads I went and drilled it and have the top box on now for the bad spell of weather as my tail bag was getting destroyed with the rain

I might invest in one of rafal's rear/pannier racks cos I've a nice set of givi voyager bags not being used  :good:
