2 days to departure. Complete change of plan due to rising COVID cases in Central Europe.

The new trip is Lapland.

But to make it affordable, we're camping.  That means a shed ton of stuff we hadn't initially planned on taking and packing the bike is proving tricky.

Two riders, (85kg and about 70kg), 20kg topbox and two 8kg panniers on the wingrack.  So about 190kg total bouncing around on the back end of my TDM.

Too much for the TDM rear subframe?

(Found info on JBX's site: says 203kg: sound about right?)

Dunno the limit but......

Mine's had 200kg (people) & 3x 45litre boxes loaded on the wingrack.

Single-handedly reviving the Wave.

My handbook dated 2007 says Maximum load: 198kg. Bike weight is 229 kg. This is for an ABS model so the weight of that kit could be added to the load, perhaps, to give the 203 in JBX.

I would transfer as much weight as possible from the topbox to the panniers, for two reasons: 1. lower the weight and thus the bike C of G, to reduce the effect on the handling, 2. bring the weight closer to the centre of the bike and cantilever less out the back, reducing the stress on the subframe.

My bike has diagonal stays from the peg brackets to the underside of the tail. I believe these came as part of a Givi Monorack for a topbox, presumably to add support to the bike's subframe. I have the separate side pannier frames, not a Wingrack.

Could you put some of the weight in a tank bag and bring it closer to the centre, plus add some load to the front tyre? Aso, check the bolts joining the subframe to the main frame - two big Torx heads each side.

Whatever, enjoy the trip.

Thanks folks.

Ive been purging my kit all evening.

At the outset it was a pannier each for clothes, the sleeping bag and mat. But I that meant a whopping 20kg top box and EXcluding the 5.5kg tent on top.

I later went for a redistribution. Camping and cooking gear along with some dried food in the panniers:12 kg each. And now about 15kg total in the top box.

Still a bit nuts but better than before. I guess thats riding two-up and camping!

If only Scandinavian hotels were so steep

Holler if you need a (double) bed for a night or two close to Oslo Airport - weather conditions can be somewhat adverse hereabouts.

Unlikely to be down that far south as we have avoiding Sweden like, well, the virus!  Any Norway km will be waaaay up north.

But thanks all the same.
