Hi all, yet again my super trusty 9er has presented with issues that really worry me. First of all I'm noticing an undulating vroom-vroom-vroom sound that comes and goes steadily when cruising, and a funny vibration through both footpegs that comes and goes as well. The other day I got a very odd slipping thing that felt like I was losing transmission a bit like being in the wrong gear but it continued when dropping a gear and felt almost like it might cut out or lose drive completely. The vibes are getting worse and now on starting its sounding very odd, just a bit lacking. Steady but ticking and odd. Sorry to be so vague. I'll be taking it for a look asap anyway as this has me concerned.
Can any of you gurus shed light on this or suggest ideas? Many thanks,
Robin

After that, make sure your clutch is properly adjusted, not worn out or the friction plates contaminated.

Has it been sitting for a while? Could be a tight spot in the chain

Also, any ideas on if the cush drive rubbers are fairly universal? Being a 17" wheel I'd hope they'd be generic. And how about clutch plates and spring? How specific are these? Just wondering if these might just be on hand at the shop in case they are needed. The bike will have 50k on the clock by the time I get home tonight!

I think the cush drive rubbers are specific to the bike. Clutch plates might be shared with other Yamahas but the first and last one might be specific to your bike, hence why they come in sets.

Assume you've been using the right oil (JASO) and not car engine oil? That would contaminate the clutch plates and make them slip.

When you say slack....it’s meant to be 55-60mm, if you’ve had a new tyre fitted by a shop they usually make them much tighter, may be the cause?

Thanks everyone, had a good result at the shop today, a worn rear wheel bearing was found to be causing the brake disc to foul the pads and when warm, to engage with it a bit causing me to feel a loss of drive. Sorted. Now the bike feels like it has the sort of positive feel and poise it used to. Which is nice :-)

...and its worse than before. :-( been talking to the mechs again and they think now it must be misfiring. Seems to explain current symptoms so could be sparkplug or coil causing one cylinder to fire poorly.

Have you do the HT lead tape mod?

Remove coils, leads, and plug caps.  Get some new leads (Magnacor will sell lengths)

Keep all parts indoors overnight to ensure totally dry.

Reinstall new leads

Purchase Self Amalgamating tape

Wrap all the way from coils to plug caps ensuring overlap on each turn

I would suggest this as first step, as cheap mod.

I have done this with all my TDMs with great success to avoid misfire.

you could try increasing the idle speed once you've found the adjuster hidden behind left hand frame.
This ought to tell you if its the csm or not,
