Has anyone done an idiots guide to advancing the timing??

I have looked thru the search results, and lots of pics are missing.

What tools are required?

TIA

Chris.

The crank sensor/pickup coil is In with the alternator stator, LHS engine case cover. The 2 holes in the pickup mounting plate need to be slotted, and the locating flanges ground off, which then let's you move the coil towards the rear of the bike..
If you were looking through the engine cover it would be clockwise, but as you look at the inside of the cover it is then anticlockwise.

I have pics somewhere

Cheers,
A little job for the future...
Is it worth disconnecting the 2 wires that go to the gearbox sensor ( the ones next to the neutral wire) while i have got my spanners out ??
Cheers
Chris.

Yes it's not required to do anything but spoil the fun.  The difference isn't great, no more top end power, but my 850 seemed to be a bit more responsive in lower gears afterwards

Those two wires are not present on the TRX850, but the final gearing is not the same.

I guess they change the TCI timing to limit the torque on the 2nd & 3rd gears...

Most French 4TX owners remove them.

I've done the retiming but not the 2nd/3rd gear thing. It was enough for me and I can blatt it  at 2.5k revs no problem, especially at Applecross

There's a good chance you'll need to replace the cover gasket Chris.  Think Wemoto sell 'em for not a lot of lolly.

I found this pic

....showing the elongated mounting holes. On the rear of the bracket are some punched locating lugs around the mounting holes which need to be ground or filed back. Wrap the sensor in insulating or masking tape before you begin because it is magnetised and will attract all the filings

1mm of movement of the sensor equates to just under 1 degree of advance. You need to ensure that your slots don't let the tip of the sensor move closer to the flywheel. As long as you slot them only horizontally then the sensor won't contact the flywheel

Good question, I desoldered the wires from mine to make it easy to manage, but if you have enough room on the bench you can get a few inches of free play before the wire goes through a floating grommet....you could probably push the grommet back up the wiring to get more free play. The pickup sensor wires and alternator stator wires run through the same grommet

I did fixitscans timing mod. The difference is subtle but there is an improvement (although I am running with a Dynojet kit too). Be careful to slot the holes accurately, if you're not careful you could have the sensor contact the flywheel causing damage. I removed mine at the connecting block, removed the sensor and stator from the cover, rapped it in plastic to protect it from the swarf and slotted the holes on a mill. If you grease your gasket on both sides before fitting, if you have to remove the cover again it should be reusable.
