Battery is the most likely. Some remotes can be reset by holding both open and close buttons down together for 20-30 seconds while standing next to the car. Or fill the locks with a releasing agent WD40 or similar.
If you end up breaking the window there is the possibility you still cant open the door or start the engine.
AA or RAC?

Are you at home - I've had this problem a couple of times and it was due to a radio transmitter nearby overpowering the remote? Once was next to a Police Station, the second time I was at Alexandra Palace - I looked up to the sky for inspiration and saw this f***ing great big transmitter looking down on me....................
The AA guy said it's a common problem on Army bases and usually becomes a problem when batteries get weaker. They usually carry a piece of kit that measure the strength of signal from the fob, the last time they identified that my fob was fubared even with a new battery.

What car is it?
I don't know of any that still doesn't have a manual key, even keyless entry cars use a remote that have a key in the fob that pulls out with a switch or tab.

I thought they all had a hidden manual key, and a hidden keyhole somewhere. My Volvo has, and my wife's old Renault was the keyless card type - still had a key inside the card.

A few days ago the remote for my car stopped locking the driver's door altogether. The other doors would lock ok but not the driver's. After spraying WD40 into every orifice without success I took it to the agents who pronounced death on the lock itself and ordered me a new one. When I picked the car up this was the breakdown of the bill...
Investigate and report driver's door not locking via key from outside..........£67.50
Replaced driver's door latch motor............................................................£148.50
Cost of Part OSF DOOR LATCH...............................................................£123.21
VAT...............................................................................................................£67.84
------------
Total..........................................................................................................£407.05
=======
In the old days it would have been panel off, a squirt of 3 in 1 and job done! In fact for £407 quid you could have bought a new bloody car!

Thanks , all !
It's a 2003 Toyota Corolla Verso. Mechanical locks driver and rear door - both stuck.
The remote/key is of this type (the picture shows a blank, uncut, empty shell):
And - both remotes stopped working simultaneously, so probably not a faulty remote.
Yes - need to test more sprays / heating to get in the bl¤¤#@ thing.
maybe it needs to be reset (found a description on the web, thanks cobi)...

I see what you mean, so the mechanical locks are stuck and the remote doesn't work.

The mechanical locks are probably sticky from lack of use. Spooge them. De-icer, duck oil, WD 40, graphite powder, hair dryer, compressor etc.
If both fobs are not working find the receiver on the car. It, or it's connections, might be covered with some crud or........... demanding money.
It would be worth goggling how to take your keys to bits. They may have lint issues.

TDM 850 Loud and unusual. CRM 250r Woo hoo! DT 230 Lanza Fiddled with.... Bloody hell, is that legal? GG Randonee AKA "I didn't think that was possible".

...and the solution was:
1) Hair dryer -> Lock open
2) key in ign lock -> dead
3) Look up - coupé light switch on = daughter w/new driver's license few weeks ago probably left it on at sunday (5 days = thoroughly drained battery)
4) Need a new battery. Existing one ~5 years, just as good to get a new....
Thanks for all suggestions - allways good to have a list of things to try out when in trouble !

Yeah - but a bit disappointed, too; Looking forward to the following conversation:
- "Car salvation yard"
- "yeah, hi, I need a rear door glass for a Corolla Verso 2003. D'you 'ave it ?"
- "What side ?"
- "Doesn't matter"
- "What ???"
- "it isn't broken yet, I'll choose the cheapest one"
:-)

That's the spirit !
Now you need to ask your daughter just what she was doing in the car with the light on last Sunday night!
Or praise her for having the light on. It's when the lights go out that trouble soon follows
900 with better bits. Owes me nothing, Makes me smile

Like when I left my MkI in "Park" on friday and a neighbour tried to warn me on saturday but concluded on sunday that I had already switched lights off so no need to try find me any longer.
A new battery, that cost....
