I'm going to look at a 97 bike. Is there anyway to check if it is a 97 and not a 96. Do the engine numbers help. I did see the 97 has a few changes but this is the first TDM I am looking at so am a complete newb

Interested in very very old bikes with the ocasional newish one thrown in.

1996, 1997, 1998 are all the same and have twin odd shaped headlamps,  these are 4TX models.  The original TDM 850 came out in 1991 and has twin round headloights,  it was in production till 1995 but there are some that were late registered,  these are 3VD models.

spyball alarm/immob, bluespot brake calipers and Stainless hoses, Fournales air adjustable shock with Remote Resevoir, forks raised 10mm thru yokes, racetech linear fork springs in 15 wt oil, Kappa wingrack/luggage, heated grips, Kedo handguards, dual heat controller to power heated jacket liner and or pants!!, Stebel 136DB horn, K&N air filter, colour matched Baglux tank cover (magnetic tank bag modified to fit cover), osram +50% headloight bulbs, headlight protector,"NitramSpecial" parking loight, tail light indicators all running on LED's & incorporate "Lite Buddies", MK7 Scottoiler fitted, taller screen, 2-2 stainless steel CCC's, Devil stainless down pipes. MKI Renntec engine crash bars & sump guard.
engine changed july 2007 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired.

I loike tay and hang sangwiches !

it'll prolly be yella and silver or sort of silvery and black.  Ask the owner about service history and the method they use to check d'oil level,  does it use much oil etc?  if they loike cake and tea then it may be a careful owner and a good buy.

Doin valve clearances? Use dappers valve shim exchange program and the job will be carroty - Free (other than you postin me yer shims) for sporting members.

Active member of TPLQHCSRSFC and TSRMCMAS (even though a year off) and avid fan of PM not sent.

Be careful,ride it for one hour and you're hooked for life.I wanted to take out swingarm and bought another tdm  so that I wouldn't be without.

Well I bought it. More details to follow as I'm off to a bike event now. But after a short test ride I love it. Gearbox is a bit clunky. But I am used to a BMW box so I'm sure I'll get used to that

One of the bike mags years ago said of the Mk1 850 "the gearbox is clunkier than a paddle steamer on dry land" :lol:


1992 Mk1, 76k miles, Hagon springs, MTC exhaust, 4½ gears Gone now :(
2009 900 abs, 42k miles, Yamaha heated grips, double bubble screen, R&G crash bungs, scottoiler, Autocom, 1500 lumen LED spotlights.
