3Vd Speedo Cable And Now Other Tinkerings

TDM has ever so occasionally had a little think about turning the starter when switch pressed. It has always then started fine after a few attempts, but since I have a new farter solenoid thing its been replaced. It has done 30years duty so acceptable reliability for an electrickery based item.
Anyyyyways, whilst it's all stripped Doon I decided to clean the few electrickery connectors the MK1 has.
Annnyyywayss...then I remembered the Speedo has been skipping. I think this is normally a clock issue rather than cable? The cable turns freely. I removed the inner and cleaned. Reinserted pnarr and then decided to bind some oil down there.
It vommed up some dark goo at t'other end.
Would like to do some more cleaning incase it is the cable rather than clocks bit not sure what is best method?
Also anyone had luck solving this Speedo skipping issue? I don't want my clock dial to break as I know some have.

Can't remember the last time you posted about doing some TDM fettlin' Good to see you at it.
Have you checked the inner cable ends for any signs of wear ? They're square shaped so subject to wear if not fully inserted.
I also found it better to connect the wheel end of the cable first as it stops the inner cable from sliding out of the speedo if you fit this end first.

Been a long time since it has been nekked so plan to get as many bits done as possible.
Carb sync is on the list, I know I would have wanted to do that with airbox attached...but wondering HOW I managed that. Haaa. Anyways I will either remember (not likely) or come up with a new solution.
And a pic....just because I can

I wait with anticipation to hear of your solution. Also, be good to know if it actually makes any difference to balance with airbox on and off.

Anywayyyyyys....this here Speedo cable. I'm tempted to run some more oil through it and bung it bacon unless anyone has a good idea for cleaning the inside of the outer cable?!
Edit:
Just to remind myself, lower shock bolt for the list...still on me ford wishbone bolt for this so graded rather than yamamallow graded!

I don't think on or off would make much diff to sync but friggin around trying to wiggle hairbox bacon after might..but then I wouldn't resync carbs everytime the hairbox is removed so maybe it don't matter anyroad.

Ooooh, we like pics.
You could put some oil in the outer cable, block both ends then swish it around for a while. Might be that most of the black stuff was grease from the wheel end anyhoos ?

Peat, are ya certain twas a faulty starter relay and not partially corroded starter button contacts ( i had that issue)? I guess yew'll find out once yer back on the road after lockdoon. I tink i'd want to use oil as Studz suggests as opposed to brake cleaner or a strong degreaser to clean up the speedo cable. I do have this very runny grease that is used to grease chainsaw clutch bearings and guide bar nose sprockets that i was considering using on the speedo cable ends but i must look at the HBOL firstly. yer TDM's chassis must have done over 100k by now i guess?
spyball alarm/immob, bluespot brake calipers and Stainless hoses, Fournales air adjustable shock with Remote Resevoir, forks raised 10mm thru yokes, racetech linear fork springs in 15 wt oil, Kappa wingrack/luggage, heated grips, Kedo handguards, dual heat controller to power heated jacket liner and or pants!!, Stebel 136DB horn, K&N air filter, colour matched Baglux tank cover (magnetic tank bag modified to fit cover), osram +50% headloight bulbs, headlight protector,"NitramSpecial" parking loight, tail light indicators all running on LED's & incorporate "Lite Buddies", MK7 Scottoiler fitted, taller screen, 2-2 stainless steel CCC's, Devil stainless down pipes. engine changed july 2007 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired.

I have a load of agric oil, currently soaking slug front hub/sealed wheel bearing assembly 180,000 on a burring ain't too bad...but sealed jeebus what a pain to replace. Anywayyyyyys I will bung the cayboo in there for a while once slug bit is ooot.
I think you are right SR, mostly old grease in vom bucket.
No idea if solenoid or not wicky..a lot of time will tell as very intermittent problem and never when I set off where I have all the accoutrements to investigate.
Can try taking starter switch apart I suppose.
I also acf50d under the tank yesterday....30years on and still more paint than the 9er bhoyos will ever see. ;0)

Noubt wrong with bolt dabs.. hopefully. just been a while since greased to prevent bolt binding to bush.

those bandlehar switch clusters are a bit fiddly with springs and udder tings in there to catch yew out so go steady now. A quick squirt of ACF50 in thru any tiny holes / spaces will usually suffice but there is great satisfaction to be had from actually stripping them down and seeing how day work.
ps. how'd ya gerron with Le Slugs rusty seat belt mounts and did ya take any pics ferrous to peruse of the repair procedure? 180k is good but oi'd imagine with your maintenance regime twill reach 500k with ease.

A new cable has stopped dancing speedo for me (not TDM).

I seem to recall that you don’t put oil/grease on the last few inches of the cable where it goes into the speedo. That’s a general ‘recall’ not TDM specific, so I could be wrong.

Venhill list cable for 92&93tdm can't imagine they changed and then changed again for MK1! It's shown as on backorder anyways.
Jim, I also recall only light dose of light oil on cable else it will all end up in the Speedo housing.
Not convinced it is cable as both inner and outer seem healthy but it's a good place to start.

It's in the 'Meter' section Daps. If you follow the lookup route from TDM850 to Year, Model, Country, Colour, you end up with the Assembley menu on the right. Meter section lists the cable.
But you're right, it can be hard to find when ya don't know what section it's in. BTW It's the Speedometer Cable Assembly.
