Hey guys! I do hope you are all well and staying safe. I do still log in and have a read through and comment where I can. I've been using the time wisely and working on the TDM with the (hopeful) aim of finally getting it back on the road this year, after nearly three years of no ridey :(

Due to it sitting so long, the carbs seized, so I took them off, soaked them in old petrol, freed them up, and then stripped, cleaned and re-assembled with new gaskgets and seals. They're back on the bike, and the hour or so of swearing re-attaching the throttle cables was soon forgotton when she fired up quite nice after nearly three years. She's got new plugs, a new ignition coil with new leads, & wrapped in self amalgamating tape. Anywho...

I can tell it's not quite right, left cylinder is not running as warm as the right (from the heat test on the downpipes). - Either that or the right is too warm. Bike not overheating though. I expected it needing a carb sync, so no surprises there. - I've bought a carb sync kit, and one of my jobs today was to have a go. Now here comes my envitable stupid question:

How the blazes does one access/reach/turn the carb sync screw with the battery still in place? The screw (on mine) points almost downwards, and it seems I'd need a very nimble screw driver with three elbows to get at it. Am I missing something, or not even approaching this correctly?

As always inordinate thanks and appreciation in advance!

Howdy Butch.

What I do is take battery out, take battery box out then connect battery to leads using jump leads. :)  Be careful not to earth the leads.

Dappers does, I never have, Dappers might know if it makes a difference, I don't have a dotty blue.

Just remember to warm the engine first, then lower the tickover as far as possible before you start tweaking. :good:

Okie doke - I'll leave off I think, just to give myself more space and light, if you both don't bother!
Whilst I'm asking stupid questions:
1 - You mention to be careful not to earth the leads when running jumpers from the battery - Just so I know how to not do it, how would I earth them by mistake?

2 - You say to lower the tickover before tweaking. The Heinz says to make sure its set correctly?

Just keep the red and black leads apart and don't let the red one touch any metal parts of the bike or there will be lots of sparkys flying and if any fuel spilt lots of flameys too.

Wrap a placcy bag around the red croc clip where it joins the red battery lead and you should be ok, assuming you have the red and black the right way round of course.

Heinz had a bit of trouble listing a working procedure. Mek it nekked afore warming else you will have a cold boike by time panels off. Or better still warm, dismantle then warm again.

I leave hair box to minimise carb disturbance but may well make little/no diff.

I lost a fair bit of battery ooomph with jumps. Just make sure you have it all planned ooot before connection if you are going to remote connect it.

Chairs Dappers, that makes a lot of sense. I'm planning so far on having tank one side of the boike and battery the other side I think, just in case. I ran it briefly yday with airbox off just to make sure it would run ok, and it back-fired through the left carb a couple times, and as that cylinder is cooler, I think defo that one may be a bit ooof the factory specs. I'll see how easy the screw is to access with airbox on/off and make a call on that then!

It's easy enough to access. Just find a good size screwdriver, make a note of where orig setting is, just incase and practice locating screw without boike running afore main event.

Can't remember from me mkii days but tank may rotate while still attached loike mki.

No think they is standard dabs. The tank doesn't raise much at back by poipes. Just lift at front to clear air filter pivot anti clock and rest on Volvo box.

a small replacement fuel tank is a very handy thing his is the one i use - a lot safer and worry free rather than waiting for the tank to fall off under vibration

Sealey Tools MS029 Motorcycle Portable Fuel Tank- 1ltr - other types are available or you could presumably make one

TDM 1991 - two into one micron mated with a A16 Road and Race Supplies Stainless short can - Conti Road Attacks - Kagazume Wavy Rear Disc - Bagster tank cover - homemade sheepskin seat cover on top of custom seat cover - NonFango topbox on homemade mount - custom fusebox - very loud airhorn and cyclone alarm
