Why would you speed on a Harley. You need to be going slow enough to catch all those admiring glances from attractive young ladies who are obviously keen to be associated with that huge beast throbbing between your legs

Harley recall for an oil pipe that could come loose and spray oil on the real wheel and cause the rider to fall off , i thought there was more chance of the rider catching there beard in the rear wheel , and AS for the men

An experiment of thought: You were to ride from A to B and noone would see you leave or arrive, nor would you expect to meet anyone with any idea of the difference between bikes during the trip. Would you choose a Harley ? A cafe racer ? A bobber ? A rat bike ? A BMW GS1200 ? (OK, the GS may be the opposite, actually.....if I was invisible I'd might consider it)

 @ Retro.

For some it is, for others not so.  Same as a lot of other bikes really. imho.  Once rode a mates VN800 but didn't like the feet forward, arms akimbo, back breaking position, plus it was really wibblywobbly at low speed.

Love it....

...gotta say though - I love my V Rod too and with a top speed of 137mph, standing 1/4 of 11.38 and zero - 60 of 3.52 I wouldn't say it was  sluggish, although it's academic to me as I don't particularly like riding fast....

rs4Y62N.jpg?1

...... brakes are sh!t though (especially compared to my TDM) and handling is, to say the least, interesting, particularly over the Thelwall Viaduct on a windy day with those solids.

I'll keep the TDM for my European tours and longer rides but for summer Sunday mornings the V Rod will do fine

$0.02

Harleys - way (weigh :cake eating: ) too heavy, some have dubious handling, lots have poor brakes. All the varieties of HD (new ish and old - fully dressed to far-out chopper), I've ridden over the years have induced a huge grin of satisfaction - all from the ride - none of it born of posing/image. :hide:

Never ridden a Harley, never even sat on one, but I have vowed that this year I will blag a go on one, (amazing what passing the 60 year old mark does to your sense of perspective!).........at least then I can see what all the fuss is about.

Don't think I'll be swapping my TDM for one anytime soon though, I have owned a couple of 'feet forward' style of bikes, including a fully chopped '51 Triumph in my younger days, and can't see that my ageing back/knees/arms etc would be able to stand the posture issues of that style of bike.

Still, wouldn't it be a boring world if everyone liked the same bikes/beer/cars/houses......?

Always liked the look of the newer 1200 Sportsters especially in the "racing" orange & black paint scheme, wouldn't mind one for a weekend and then hand it back, bit like looking after the grandchildren

Hey, we need more love for the pirate crowd.

It is no small engineering accomplishment to build a bike that is spine shattering hard and wobbling at medium speeds at the same time. And I think we should admire the determinedness they follow their motto:

"Transforming fuel into noise without the detour of performance since 1903."

A German HD representative once was quoted in a German moto mag with their business model description: "We sell people a lifestyle. The bike is an add-on".

But they are very successfull doing this, so that other manufacturers follow this strategy a lot now.

+1 !

In perticular, I find the noise silly ! Sounds like the cardbord pieces we used to put on the bike to have "cardboard engines"... I understand why someone like Ducatis, even BMW's, VFRs, benellis, old 3cyl/2 stroke, '70's Honda CB550 Four, etc., etc., but the "splatt-splatt-splatt" of a Harley..... just can't understand.

Tested one some years ago, but it made little impression and I can't remember much part from the "been there, done that" conclusion.

Ok, each to his/her own.... by all means !

It's not splat splat splat its potato potato potato.
I don't judge folk by what they buy but their attitude once they have them.

By the bye there is a Harley rider from somewhere around Langholm area & he rides his big twin to work all weathers, all year round & he always nods. :good:

Potato Potato was the sound they tried to patent and failed, but in reality it's horses for courses

There are a few Harleys that I'd love to have XR750 and an old Knucklehead but I do find buy

the bike buy the lifestyle a bit hard to take.

Today, I finally got round to riding one!
Had a couple of hours on a 1200 Sportster 48.
Definitely puts a smile on your face.....and deaf ears, even with earplugs in!
Did I enjoy it? Certainly!!!!!
Would I buy one? If I had the luxury of having four or five bikes, then yes. It was a hoot to ride, amazing torque and noise, made me feel like I was 19 again, then my back started aching, and the practicalities started to dawn on me, so I took it back, and said 'thanks, but no thanks'.
Highly recommend it if you haven't tried one.....the dealer was really friendly and helpful, couldn't fault them!
