Lovely bike QM. Watching this thread with interest having recently had a sit on one. Unfortunately it's far too high for me but would suit hubby, BSM.
You don't need balls to ride a big bike.

Has anybody here had a test ride on the MT07? If you do you will greatly miss the grunt of the TDM. Its just not there. Unlike the MT09. The missing 200 cubes are very noticeable. And it is soooo tiny! My missus hated it on the back.

I think a 700 Ten to replace the underpowered 660 would be good but it will not be big enough in any sense to replace the TDM.

But the mapping is perfect!!!

Rob

had an mto7 as a loner to get me home from the garage when the tdm was in getting valves and fluids and shims and electrics looked at , first impression of the 07 was that it is narrower than the niner , filtering in Aberdeen traffic was a doddle , I am short in the legs but could get both feet on the ground ,, tippy toes , didn't like the 2 piece seat , no screen, wind blast was a pain , tingly fingers from the vibes , but the mirrors were good , that would be the only thing I would take off the 07 and put on the niner , hope this helps :good:

I really really wanted one of those. Rode the 130 mile round trip to the Yamaha shop to have a look & a sit on & was very impressed indeed.

Came home & had a think for a week & decided to go for a test ride. Set off again & 1/3 the way there thought this is ridiculous. Carlisle must be the only city in the civilised world without a Yamaha dealer & turned round & visited the local dealers.

To cut a long story short I rode a 1 year old Tiger 800 at 13:30 & by 16:03 it was in my garage. It ticked all the boxes. I can't keep off it.

The last British bike I had was in about 1972 & I swore I would never have another but these bikes are light years away from the old Triumphs.

If Yamaha ever come back to Cumbria that would be another story but I think the Tiger is here to stay. In the mean time I need a whole new wardrobe :rotflmmfao:

I'm very attached to it! My colleagues call me Squadron Leader so I guess it must be an airforce one.

:good: A very well cultivated and cared for piece of face furniture Quartermaster, you should be proud! it's very British in style and gives you an air of authority, and I imagine it's a big hit with the ladies

Not the tache, QM, obviously. For me, tiny is gooood. I nearly had a test but my head got in the way again. How have I become so indecisive?

The Tracer looks effective package and seems best replacement for TDM in many respects.

This one was at "The Raven" in Shropshire on Sunday ... resolves my only remaining concerns about the Tracer (screen/handguards/(and possibly) bars combo). Looked great - not makers mark on screen or guards.

Anybody have any info?

Pete

Cracking looking bike. I took a test ride myself on one a couple of weeks ago. I've posted some comments on here under...

TDM vs Yamaha Tracer (I think). http://www.carpe-tdm.net/ipb/index.php?showtopic=31400

Be interesting to read your impressions.

So I just thought I'd share my thoughts on the Yamaha Tracer after getting a test ride on one yesterday. Being realistic I am thinking I may change my TDM900 next spring or later Or may be not. But I just want to see if the Tracers was a worthy replacement. I am going to try the Tiger 800 as well and I still have a soft spot for the Super Tenere 1200 and the FJR1300 but that's more money unless I get 2nd hand.
The tracer is, I think a good looking bike. The new riding position takes a bit of getting used to, more toward Multistrada or Buell Ullysys. At first I thought it felt like your legs were further back compared to the TDM 900 but the longer I rode it it was more like you butt was about an inch and half higher and 3-4 inch further forward towards the the bars. Whilst in the topic of the bars they are flatter, wider and have less of a pull back compared to the TDM 900.
The saddle is on the firm side after 30min I could feel pressure in my sit bones, but no numb bollox. Yamaha offer a "comfort saddle" @ £244. Nice of them eh! I recon the padding will soften with a bit of time or it could be adjusted with different density of foam or gel pad. If I was honest I wouldn't have minded it being an inch closer to the ground. I've alway liked taller bikes, on the Tracer I was one foot flat the other on the toes ( I am 5' 8.5" but suffer from Scotsman decease so as such have 30" inside leg) the rear shock is rising rate and has dog bones so getting it lowered shouldn't be an issue.
Power was really good it could pull from 22 mph about 2400 rpm in forth gear right the way through the Rev range. It started to sing at 6000 and and 8000 really goes but only done that once as motor was still being ran in. I did notice a slight tingle from footrest at 5000 but changing the footrest to rubber coated would remove this I am sure. The fuelling was good once twice felt the 'TDM900 stutter' and that was 2nd gear in traffic but it really wasn't as bad as some of the bike mags make out. The A mode is a waste unless you like wheeling. It turn s the throttle into an on/off switch. Twice I nearly head butted the taller Yamaha screen due to abrupt power delivery causing it to pop a wheelie. The B mode is like the throttle cable has a rubber band connected between it and the throttle bodies. I supposed this could be useful on cold frosty/ icy mornings. Just leave it in Standard mode.
Whilst on subject of fuelling a few times at the beginning I stalled the Tracer due to me not giving it enough gas to pull away, I think it was because I am used to being able to just let my clutch out and the TDM 900 being able to pull away. On my hour test ride the average on the dash was showing as 47 mpg. I did notice a small 'Eco' logo appear on the dash when you are gentle with the throttle.
The Tracer I rode was fitted with the Yamaha touring screen which requires the removal of the covers on the hand guards. The screen done a good job of deflecting the wind blast I didn't feel any turbulence but it wasn't quiet ether. I wear earplugs and it wasn't unpleasant.
The tracer looks like it could be a good all rounder the finished looked as good as the TDM 900.i think I'd have to do something with the saddle and would probably change the hand guards to May be the Super Tenere ones so as they worked more effectively rather than decorative. The headers apparently have a special coating that is suppose to stop them tarnishing. Still unsure of the number plate ' dangle berry' thing, but most bike appear to be coming out like this. The hugger that is standard is too short for my liking and the fact I ride pretty much all year round. The soft panniers are a bit of a cop out to me I dare say some will like them but I'd rather wait until the likes of Givi make them. Duffus MC have a source for the USA available hard panniers and fixings. Apparently Europe will not be getting the hard pannier due to the fact the euro Tracers are unrestricted and USA Tracers are restricted to 115mph. Also rumour is FJR pannier will fit just require the bottom fixing points ( but don't quote me on that).
So would I by one? may be. The Tiger 800 will have to be good to match the Tracer especially at the price.

Met a guy today at a bike meet near me in Murcia and admired hi '91 850, one of only a very few TDMs I've seen around here.

He explained that there weren't many about because, if I hadn't noticed, 'they're not very tall around here'.

He was sort of interested to talk about my 900 and TDMs in general but was much keener to tell me all about the Tracer that he wanted.

Test rode the Tracer and the VStrom 100 a couple of weeks ago.

Preferred the tracer, and went away for a think.

Then I read that a parallel twin 100 is due at the end of the year - Africa twin. Waiting a few months to see if that appears.
