On bike "A" I had one go at 45000 one at 80000 but the third is at 145000 and OK.
Bike "B" is at 98000 and the stator is still OK.

Only had the issue on my first TDM.

First @ about 75K, second at about 90K.

The second was still good when we stripped the bike - I think...Mr Henty took it to investigate re-winding it himself (with good success I believe), which makes me wonder if it was dead??? If it was then it was 105K not 90K.

Memory is failing I'm afraid...

Did you all have additional non standard electrical gizmos attached to these boikes? Heated Satnav holders and space ship lights or is this happening in standard format too?

Does not seem to be an 850 issue.

Only thing I had was heated grips (~3amps from memory), and HID dipped beam (??amps, but less than standard bulb I believe).

I thought mine was down to a less that rigorous oil change schedule, but doesn't look like it.

I've got one of those LED Charge Indicators to fit so I get a bit of early warning next time...

Hmm wonder if there is a pattern

Symtec heated grips

Heated gloves

HID

So wonder if the spike used by the HID ballast coming as it does when the starter motor has drawn from the battery and is recharging creates a bit of a perfect storm..

I thought that too but bike"A" didn't have heated grips or hid and burned 2 stators while bike "b" had both and hasn't burned one.

Wonder if the fact that the 850 windings are "potted" make a difference?

To be honest I think it's to do with the core, if it's good you won't have any trouble but if there is a sharp or rough edge or corner it can wear through the paper layer and cause a short.

An Update ...

Went down the route of the Electrex G14  ...thanks Stiggy for all  your help

Wires were long enough, tried to salvage the connectors from the RR plug, but not very successful so ..

The plug on the stator that plug into the RR is a Furukawa 3p250wp ... could only find EasterBeaver or US sites selling just the spade connectors a special locking type not seen before ... had to resort to what looks like a patttern

http://www.ebay.co.u...MoAAOSwt5hYdihb

Fitted the LED charge indicator ..http://www.ebay.co.u...=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

Time will tell

Happy to help hvass. Mine's been fine since :)

Glad to know you sorted it in the end. Out of interest and for future reference, what mileage is your bike Stiggy?
Hopefully the mods can add this to the knowledge base.

Sorry - missed this muddy. Bike had don 66k miles.

Lots of in town idling in traffic and heat build up maybe ? No issues on my older 4TX at 100k plus but very little urban riding on it...just another angle on it..

Could well be. I ride into central London, so plenty of slow riding/hot engine/fans on etc. It's telling that the paint on the casing bubbles badly too (though also corrosion related). When I stripped it, the top of the stator definitely looked worse than the bottom which gets the oil.

I started a survey about this many years ago. Not really enough response to go on, but it seems to affect higher mileage 900s, but not many of them. I'm now up to 86K miles, with no charging issues.

.....you have only yourself to blame Chris.

If a bike is used infrequently the battery can drop off. You'll have enough in reserve to start the bike, but staight afterwards the  stator will be running at full output for a while till the battery comes back up. A good stator shouldn't suffer too much, but ones with what seem to be an insulation problem (from the few photos I've seen, and experienced with my own bike) then that could be a problem.

What was the failure mode of the G14 ? Any obvious signs of burning anywhere ?

The 850 stator I fitted to my 900 is still going well, despite the addition of heated grips now and extra LED lights. That's 15k so far, I inspected it ac oouple of times and there doesn't seem to be any hotspots (visually speaking)
