But in Meantime
Have you checked your Brake pads etc?
Had similar noises in the past
Turns out the pads were coming apart
That was fun
Oh and Welcome

I had exactly this, it was a bent tooth on the front sprocket. It wasn't massively bent, but obviously enough to cause the noise. Take it off and lie it on a flat surface to visually check, there shouldn't be any distortion. My C&S were worn anyway, so I replaced the lot. If you have a new C&S fitted recently, that's a bummer, but you may just be able to get away with just replacing the front sprocket if the C&S don't have many miles on them .

Oil and scottoiler fine. I'm checking the front sprocket. Teeth seem fine and the nut appears really tight although I don't have a torque wrench. I am noticing slight play when I move it by hand. Not side to side but in direction of rotation. Is this normal?
No I meant engine oil level...a knocking from the bottom of the engine is a bad sign and comes after a low oil condition sometimes..... but You've got a 900 so the oil light should have warned if that was the case
You can get a bit of free play on sprockets over time. I can't remember if the 900 sprocket locks up tight on the shaft with the lock nut or of there is some free play. I don't think there should be any, but it might be worth taking it off to inspect the shaft splines and sprocket broaching, just to see

I wonder if it is worn ( compressed ) rubber shock absorbers ( the things shaped like pieces of cake !! ) in the rear wheel hub. Might be worth taking them all out and putting them back in a different position.

I have a 2007 900 and I notice a very intermittent knocking sound coming from engine or rear shock area. Only seems to happen in lower gears and is not continuous or regular. Bike seems to run OK, but it's a bit of a worry...

Have you checked off all of the above posts relating to suggestions matey ? Sounds like it could be suspension related.

I've had similar clicking and knocking. In most cases it turned out to be chain either slightly out of parallel alignment or a tight spot on the chain. Has the bike been laid up at all? Put on centre stand and slowly turn back wheel by hand, look carefully for links that are at angles to the link next to it. These could be tight links. 9000 is disappointing especially with a scotoiler but not unheard of.

Same with mine - it would only knock once when pulling away - turned out to be front brake pads moving slightly.
