hi All,

got my engine in and filled with running in oil.

I thought I'd take out the spark plug and spin the engine over to prime the system.

It doesn't seem to be pressurising and wondered if I need to have the engine running to provide the necessary revs to load the pumps?

I've used assembly lube on the top end so I'm ok for the initial  lube

Do I still try and spin up the engine with spark plugs out or just start the engine to get it all  going?

As the oil tank is above the level of the pump it should prime itself without any problems.

Well, standard method would be to fire the engine up after doing a refurb as all the parts should be loobed up anyhoos.

that's what I'm thinking.

I'll try that tomorrow as I have an oil pressure switch fitted to check pressure.

Also wondering if having the plugs out might have an effect on pressure in the lower part of the engine.

EDIT: Haynes suggests wrong viscosity oil can result in low oil pressure, along with a number of other possible causes in fault finding section.  Chapter 1.32 also explains how to check oil pressure without a pressure warning system.

thanks, I got that.

I think this type of pump needs a higher spinning engine than the starter can provide as opposed to the piston type of pump.

I walked mine in gear and removed the oil gallery bolt which resulted in it spurting out as opposed to a constant dribble as when the engine is ticking over, oil pressure light went out pretty quick when i fired it up though.

Air lock in the feed tube/gallery maybe? These pumps don't like pumping air. Mabe try to blow on the fill pipe a few times to pressurize the system somewhat.

Have similar problems with my cb750 after removing the oil tank. Blowing/pressurizing somewhat helps to get the trapped air bobbles out.

I'll try that too, maybe put an airline into the oil filler and reduce the pressure so it doesn't blow any seals.

then turn the bike over

bit wet for a walk with my bike atm.

update;

I drilled a hole in the oil cap and fitted an air line with a little air pressure.

got the bike to run a few revs and the oil pressurised in the system.

Just need to sort out the carbs as i can see he right slide isn't moving very well so may have misaligned the diaphragm in the carb top

happy days, battery on charge
