Need to replace the rear discs on my Hyundai Coupe and the rear wheel bearings need done at the same time. The wheel bearings are the conventional type with the big centre nut. All the bolts were were solid and the o/s one needed a socket and bar with a long extension to break the seal but for the life of me, I cannot get the n/s one to budge. I tried heat on the nut, but still no joy. I have tried a hammer and drift but the steel is quite soft and I just seem to be destroying the nut. Presumably, I have no choice now but to continue and beat the hell out of it, but should I apply more heat or just bludgeon it to death?

I thought of that, but the replacements are not handed so the thread must be rh. I'll go careful with the grinder and see how it goes from there. Thanks.

Try using a Dremel type grinder,it'll take longer but any damage should be minimal.

Drexel worked a treat, followed by chisel and lump hammer. Everything is seized solid, but slowly getting it stripped.

I spoke too soon. Having got the nut off, the bearing was solid on the shaft and the caliper carrier bolts wouldn't budge. Help came in the form of the indomitable Mr Henty and in in double quick time, the bearing was off and the carrier free.
Have put it all back together and brakes are working perfectly.
Thanks to all, but especially Lee.
Driveway is now free for next weeks fettle. Bring on weather like today.
