hi i took my new bike for its first spin today :) it a 92 850 3vd with 32,000 miles

during the ride the bike would stutter at a constant throttle :( at about 1500-3000 rpm .  i did about 110 miles on a full tank to reserve..is this normal?

I'm guessing this is the emulsion tubes in the carbs ..there is a lot of soot on the exhaust so does this mean its running rich?

is changing the emulsion tubes an easy job and what parts do i need?

the bike has stainless downpipes and a yoshi silencer off some other bike as its the wrong way around..will this affect the running and mpg

sorry for so many questions

Ryland

:welcome:  to the madhouse.

Rules of ownership (3vd & 4tx)

One - Check the oil! (3vd and 4tx engines use it up and react very badly to not having enough).

Two - See above

These engines burn up to a litre per 1000Km, so it might be that your seeing in the pipes.

New emulsion tubes probably wouldn't hurt it any after 32K miles, it'll give you a chance to sort the carbs out properly at the same time. I ran my 4tx a bit rich and that seems to have killed off the stutter you mention.

I used to get up in the high 50+MPG when I'd sorted my Mk2 which worked out to 160 miles to reserve (ish) but yours has a different capacity tank I believe, so no help there. ;)

There's some good advice in the knowledge base on the emulsion tubes subject, it is a pain but if I can do it anyone can. Also there are people here who will work for cake :D (or at least stand around and watch you do it). Where are you located?

I'm not sure why someone would put a silencer on the wrong way round but I can't imagine it would do any good.

Would it make it louder? :rotflmmfao:

Oh and we like pictures. :good:

Have the valve clearances been done? Due at around 28k as I recall.

There will be others along in a bit with more 3vd time to help you along.

Mick

Hi Ryland.

It does sound like the emulsion tubes need replacing, you should be getting 150+mpg before reserve.  It's well worth investing in a Haynes manual then you'll have a good idea if you're capable of doing the job.  Chances are, once you've replaced the tubes, you'll need to tweak the pilot screws and balance the carbs.

You'll need the tubes, NRP Carbs sell them http://www.nrp-carbs.co.uk/ and new seals and o rings. I'd recommend these kits http://www.litetek.c...aha_TRX850.html  you only really need Service Kit A, unless you intend on splitting the carbs to fit the B kit.

You'll also need some carb balancing gauges and possibly a remote fuel supply set up.  You might also need new inlet to carb rubbers if yours are cracked or have gone hard.

I also found this guide to setting up carbs pretty handy.  http://www.factorypr...pm_engines.html

I have a 94 mk1 (3vd) it's relatively "new" to me, 33000 on the clock, and. 'Yoshi' 2-1 from another bike. I was also getting 120miles per tank at first, tho thats gone up to 140/160 as I've got used to the bike etc. Also mine was hopeless @ 1000-2500 revs with the baffle out, put the baffle back n it's rideable at 30mph/1500 revs in 4th gear.......n it still sounds pretty gruesome with the baffle fitted!!

hi Charley  unfortunately the bike wasn't supplied  with a baffle so i cant do anything about that :(  unless i get a new silencer but i don't know what make the down pipes are so matching them is also a problem

the bike is cosmetically rough but the rest is ok ... a few cracks in the fairing and a little corrosion here and there but the bike is sound

i've ordered the parts for the carbs so i will have a go at them when i got time and start welding up the cracks in the fairing when i get some abs rods off ebay

it was briiliant to get back on a bike after a 7 year break and i just got to sort out a few minor problems with it and it will be perfect

Yes you can. Aftermarket spares are available. Search in Google for:- motorcycle exhaust baffle insert

 - or ask the can maker for advice.

I spotted them on eBay a few hours ago so I'll get one of them as well... Hopefully with the carbs being done it will sort out the stuttering... Just a set of tyres then and hopefully it will give me as much riding pleasure as my old BMW did

Is that so ? I believe mine uses 1/10 of that. Am I the only one ?

I think there was something on here a while ago saying that if they were properly run in the oil use was a lot less.

Yeah. That was my point, I believe.

That's why it kinda surprises me that so few question that oil consumption is a problem. The old TDM isn't a typical hooligan bike ? Nor is it a high speed highway cruiser - the fact that I'm rarely exceeding 140km/h is due to tha modest wind protection and upright position - just not very comfy.
