If you turn it black it will become invisible.

In other words you'll have something useless on the technical side and also on the "shiny bit that improve the look of my bike" side. :unsure2:

Btw anodizing stainless steel is very...difficult ! :P

There's nothing wrong with making things look nice. But if it doesn't add any protection, and is, Well, useless, I shall not bother. :isurrender:

If black makes things invisible then I'm lucky to find my bike in the morning! :rotflmmfao:

It means fitting shiny PV, the black bikes are a favourite of mine but i do think painting that will really be overkill, shiny will be a nice contrast  :)

Have you fitted it shiny yet just to see !!

TBH the TDM (mostly the 9er) is a very good-looking bike, it does not require improvement to look better.

That said, the radiator is not the best looking part of a bike.

This is actually a purely technical part, that's why all manufacturers always paint it black.

The black color also allows the heat to dissipate better by infra-red emission.

In case you block the infra-red emission, the radiator will not work as efficiently. If the blocking part also act as a reflector that sends infra-red emission back to the radiator, things will become even worse.

Haven't bought one yet Dabs, Like JBX says, The radiator can look a bit ugly when you take the time to look at it!

I may well get one, fit it and see what its like. The trouble with black bikes is too much black can dilute the effect but too much chrome/silver can dilute the black. Lets fit it and we can all see.   :D

BTW My camera does nothing but make my bike look shite. :(

[devils-advocate]
1. A rad cover can be viewed as a practical item to protect the radiator from stone damage. I bet the cover is a lot cheaper than a replacement radiator.
2. Whether it's black or shiny will make little practical difference to it's heat dissipation efficiency (note: I said 'practical difference'), any difference that exists will be taken up by your fan cutting in more. Black, polished s/s or shock pink is purely an aesthetic choice and for the individual to make. Personally I'm not a fan of bling, I'd paint it black.
3. As a designer, I don't believe that because something is functional that that makes it ugly, in fact the reverse. Engines, wheels, and pretty much everything else on our TDMs is functional, consumer design, including the radiator. Don't be so mean to this vital component :-) In the words of Mies van der Roe, "form follows function". Many people confuse 'design' with 'styling' and there's a school of thought (sic) that 'if something looks right, it is right'. Well, beware, 'style over substance' is a slippery slope that ends up with you becoming a beardy hipster.

You little devil you Jim!

I agree style over function is not a good idea. I think everything I've done to the bike is a mixture of function and style, The percentage split varies a lot though on different parts. I haven't (quickly thinking of everything done!) put anything on purely for looks. I wouldn't put the radiator cover on if it is purely for looks and does nothing to protect the radiator. But when its on it has to flow with the bike, which is why I think black will be better. But when it arrives I will check it out in stainless and see.

N.B. Too be fair the painted mouth on the bellypan is 100% for looks   :pimp:  :rotflmmfao:

You're right of course, motorcycles are not purely functional items, they're a luxury item and they should stir the soul, even if that involves purple anodised bolts or 12" over springer forks.

Having said all that, I cannot endorse your belly pan 'faux pas'! :)
