My current camera has this amazing ability to make anything and everything look like plop! Any recommendations on a decent second-hand one for not too much money?

I had a Panasonic Lumix DMC F5 for years and it was absolutely brilliant. small and convenient to carry, good zoom, and took great photos in all conditions.  Unfortunately the seam on the camera's leather carry case split due to lots of wear and tear and I carried the camera loose in my pocket and got some grit in the telescopic lens which jammed it and was going to cost about £70 to fix.  So I bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ55 as a replacement (on offer for about £110), and its been a big dissapointment.  It eats batteries, because it has a large zoom lens and it seems to use too much energy expanding and retracting it, especially if you switch it off between photos.  I now carry two spare batteries.  It's also very slow to focus so if you try to take an action shot chances are the subject will have gone by the time your camera is ready.  Lastly the built in flash is too focussed on the central subject and leaves everything around it discoloured or in darkness.  I'm sure there will be other Lumix models that are just as good as the DMC F5 but don't bother with  the TZ55

.......can't go too far wrong with the best-you-can-afford in either the panasonic lumix range, or the canon powershot G 10, 12, etc range,( which are meatier & not pocket friendly).....read the reviews online

Having said that, I'm, at this very moment, wrestling with a similarly-jammed lens on my canon G10......if I fail, it'll be £150 for a repair
......or the bin!

I have the Panasonic Lumix  DMC TZ30 cost a lot brill when it was working. As above ,jammed lens cost of repair £150 not acceptable with a camera that costs so much. So pretty useless , its back to my old Canon powershot a 1200, had it for years & its still working. Thought the Lumix would have been the upgrade but its no good having all the bells & whistles if it doesn't work.

I like a bridge camera for the readily available zoom, though some compacts have great zoom capacity now. Mine is a Panasonic FZ38 (since replaced in the range). Brilliant results, if not pocketable (zoom has not jammed). I use almost always on 'auto', although there are many facilities. Bought on ebay.

Olympus xz-2 is here with me now Amsterdam, with a lot of top quality Nikon gear stayed back in Scotland - Lumix L100 would be good.

Depends if you're into photography or not.

Generally speaking , if the choice comes down to physical sensor size or number of megapixels, the larger sensor gets my vote

900 with better bits. Owes me nothing, Makes me smile

Any current version of your current make will be a decent upgrade!........I prefer Canon, but the reviews of the Panasonics mentioned previously are very positive! :good:

Sony WX220.

Fag-packet small, decent zoom, long life battery, quality pix. Lots of adjustments available if you want, point'n'shoot if you don't. Video is good too.

About £105 IIRC @ John Lewis about a year ago.

Here's a pic from last September. Check out the sharpness of the pulley over the well, then the windows on the chateau. (OK, OK; the light in France is good) Hand-held, point'n'shoot; all I did was carefully select the framing.

Any of the Fuji X Series will rock you.
The X 30 comes with a zoom lens, trick viewfinder and sharpness you could shave with, but at a price.

It depends on how much you want to spend and what you want to use it for.

I have a Canon Ixus 100is which I carry. Great for the quick shot and good for those nice panoramas too. Very small and compact. Never been disappointed with the pictures from it.

Not tried a fruit phone but I generally find phone phone cameras are great in good light, ok poor light, and very useful in general because it's always in my pocket.  But the main let down for me is the lack of zoom.

I went for a Canon Powershot SX260HS mainly for the 20x optical zoom.  Pocket sized, decent battery life, and the in built GPS is a nice to have when you're using it on a touring holiday and have no idea where I took photos.

Worth having a look a http://www.dpreview.com/for decent reviews.

:good:  sensor size, optics, shooting in "raw" format and using a photo editor software like "Lightroom" from adobe makes a huge difference if you go for image quality
