Had a memorable tour of Pyrenees via St Malo ferry, Bordeaux and then into Spain and Andorra, before returning via the amazing E111 road into French Pyrenees to see the famous Col de Tourmalet and the scary Col D'Aubisque ...

More details and pictures on my Facebook page but here are a few tasters ...

The ladies who took a shine to the bikes were on a walking trip we think ... possibly with some charity/religious group. We had a serious linguistic barrier but they were great fun.

I covered a bit over 2200 miles in total ..

Possibly most enjoyable tour so far, even surpassing last year's Stelvio and Grossglockner in't Alps

Next time we will use Santander ferry I think - the charge through flat and featureless bits of France see below, was not worth a few bob saved on ferries

d--k says its only 1300.975 miles.

Agree - Ferry down to Santander & back up through France is the way to do it  :good:

No rushing - ferry sets of from Portsmouth late afternoon - 24 hours chilling out getting into the mood & route planning

Dock around six pm - an hour or so riding to a hotel/campsite in Northern Spain (Picos for me)

A week in Spain and Portugal, then head North - French Pyrenees, Tarn Gorge, Ardeche - even the Alps & up to Calais

I find the Santander ferry back a bit boring - you can't really do much the last day apart from hang around Santander, then it's 24 hours waiting to get home, making the last 2 days a bit of an anticlimax .......I prefer to spend them riding hard back up through France, finishing the tyres off

Well i'm off down to the Picos on sunday; originally planned to go to the Dolomites (once more), but can't be arsed with Kent/Calais. Will ride down through France.

Are the Picos really quite decent? Are there any roads, apart from the obvious worth a look? What about Portugal?

Looking forward to this.

Picos are excellent - then head West into Galicia & drop down into Portugal - empty roads to die for

You'll see that Picos route I put up on those links Studley posted.

But wherever you go you'll get good value & find great roads.

Look out for Spanish plod though - they're very quick at handing out fixed penalty fines.

And watch the traffic lights through the villages- make sure you're at the correct speed at the first set & you'll get a green at the next set - go too fast & they'll hold you up for ages at the next set

Oh, & remember - Portugal is the same time zone as the UK - so you gain an hour as soon as you cross the border - and lose it again back in spain - can catch you out at mealtimes
