Crisis at my kitchen sink this morning.

Identical bottles of product/Fairy Liquid, but their labels do not compute..................

rear - (UP TO 50% LONGER-LASTING than the next best selling brand). 1.5x , that's great!  :good:

front - (2x LONGER LASTING than the next best selling brand). Hold on a minute. Isn't that 100% longer lasting then?

So, the only way this can work is if "the next best selling brand" has changed recently and it is of significantly poorer quality compared to what came before it.

Crisis indeed, this thread could run and run as the Domestic Gods and Godesses among us debate merits of which of  the various Washing Up Liquids, Detergents and Fabric Conditioners we should use. It's right up there with which Oil? or Tyre? I'm a Fairy man myself. :)

"Up to" is any number up to 50, including zero.   Whereas " 2 x " is unequivocal, it WILL last twice as long. both staments would work if the "next best selling brand" has recently changed its performance. Ouch! My head hurts nurse.

Hi,

Whatever made you look at the washing up liquid? What did you do to deserve a penalty so harsh? Or were you after something?

.......apart from which, and maybe depending on the respective vintages of the two lots of 'Fairy'....if that is indeed what they both are....
there is always the possibility that the product itself has changed potency, up or down........and thus the notional comparison with other products becomes ever more spurious ( though not so sure that 'ever more spurious' is any more acceptable than 'more biggest' )

......funny...MY HEAD FEELS A BIT ODD TOO.....

It's worse.

Surely 2x is 200% ?

So 50% is only a quarter as good.

No it's not.

2x = 200% of the performance of the comparison, which is 100%, so the Fairy is 100% better. In real terms Fairy will do 200 plates to the opposition's 100, so Fairy does 100 more plates or 100% (of the opposition's) more. The key word is more.

This or a similar mistake is often made when it is claimed that summat costing £4 is 400% more expensive than another item costing £1. It ain't, it's £3 or 300% more expensive.

They're the same. :)  You only need half a bottle of fairy (50%) to a full bottle of other. So you have another 50% of the fairy to make it last 50% longer.

Also, a full bottle of other (100%) is equal to half a bottle of fairy (50%) which means Fairy lasts 2x longer.

That looks remarkably similar to some stuff the missus keeps under the kitchen sink. I use it to kill aphids. Do you think your 50% longer product would deter them for twice as long or just kill them twice as much?

Also, a full bottle of other (100%) is equal to half a bottle of fairy (50%) which means Fairy lasts 2x longer.

I'm not with you there
"Up to 50% longer lasting than the next best selling brand" says that it'll do up to 150 plates if the inferior stuff does 100
"2 x longer lasting than the next best selling brand" indicates it will do 200 plates.

So the old bottle did 150, the new one does 200, indicating the new one is 33% better than the old bottle

Ok, I'll admit it, I'm getting bored of this statistical analysis report I'm writing for the world most annoying customer and anything is a worthwhile distraction...

If the key word is 'more', how come no-one but you used it, and it's not on the bottles ?

stu,

Your final words were "So 50% is only a quarter as good" - that is what I'm disagreeing with. I started with your statement of "2x is 200%" and tried to explain why your conclusion is wrong.

I used "more" in my example discussion, not directly about the claim statements. It is comparative, just like the phrase "longer-lasting" on the labels.
